BARRY Town United recorded a confidence-boosting victory on Tuesday evening, against Newport County AFC.

Barry triumphed 2-0 on the night, with Kayne McLaggan bagging his first goals for the club.

They next take on Ely Rangers, on August 5, with Wednesday’s win is certain to have them fired up ahead of the start of their first season back in the Welsh Premier League.

The Newport County AFC squad was made up almost entirely of trialists and youth team prospects, but they were well-beaten regardless by a Barry side who looked a class above, and showed significantly more cutting edge.

Among the starting XI for the Exiles were youth team players Evan Press and Jay Foulston in central defence, and the youngsters were caught out as Barry took an early lead when Kayne McLaggan slid in to convert Chris Hugh’s cross from a yard out in the fourth minute.

Michael Flynn, returning to old stomping grounds, watched his side enjoy the lion’s share of possession thereafter, but they failed to fashion too many chances of note.

Their best opportunity saw Tom Owen-Evans drive through the middle, only to see his shot sail well wide on 20 minutes.

At the other end Paul Morgan saw a fierce drive tipped over acrobatically by the Exiles trialist keeper after half an hour.

And it was 2-0 a minute later when McLaggan took advantage of a slip in the visitors’ defence to rifle a half volley into the top corner from close range.

Ex-West Ham United man Hines had the beating of Barry right-back Morgan and turned him inside out on several occasions.

In the second half, Barry brought on Cwmbran’s Jamie Bird, who had played and scored for County at Undy on July 14.
