THIS WEEK'S Barry Island parkrun saw a cool morning that turned to heavy drizzle, as 132 people who either ran, jogged or walked, gathered under the Eastern Shelter on the promenade for event number 115.

Of the 132 participants, there were 15 first timers, 34 personal best times and representatives from eight different clubs who took part in Saturday’s event.

Wayne Stephens won the men's category for the first time, while Kate Wiltshire was the first woman to cross in her first appearance at the event.

Saturdays event was made possible thanks to the efforts of the 24 volunteers, including first time helper Christopher Barnsley whose son has started running at the event. Christopher registered last week so that he could volunteer while supporting his son.

The full results and a complete event history can be found on the Barry Island parkrun Results Page.

With the start date of the Barry junior park run rapidly approaching, the team held the first of two trial events, on Sunday 16th July.

29 juniors took to the course at Romilly park to test the route and provide feedback.

Although the trial events are not live and therefore no results are processed, every participant was timed and scanned and the results were posted, courtesy of junior parkrun director Ian Thorne.

For junior parkrun, runners must be between 4 and 14 years of age and be registered with parkrun. Adults are allowed to run with their child however they are not allowed to cross the finish line nor are they given time. All participants must have a printed barcode in order to be scanned and receive their time either via email or text.

More information about the forthcoming junior parkrun will be given closer to the launch day.

There will be no event this forthcoming Saturday, as the relocated Isle of Fire event takes place on the site across the weekend.

Barry Island parkrun started on 2nd May 2015. Since then 2,674 participants have completed 12,165 parkruns covering a total distance of 60,825 km, including 2,515 new Personal Bests.
