Barry Athletic Cricket Club first XI were beaten away at league leaders Abergavenny on Saturday, July 1, to leave them just one place outside the relegation zone in South-East Wales Division 2.

The five-wicket loss leaves Barry eighth in the table at the midpoint of the season.

After losing the toss, Barry were put in to bat by the hosts and reached 190-9 from their 50 overs, with Maqsood Anwar scoring a quickfire 45 off 33 balls that included 4 fours and 2 sixes. A well crafted 38 from Nathan Baker and 36 from Lee Morgan helped guide the visitors to a competitive score, despite a strong showing from Abergavenny bowler Andy Timpson who finished with figures of 4-53

Abergavenny reached the target with overs to spare however, making 191-5 in reply. Contributions of 66 from Will Glenn, 50 from Gareth Birkett and an unbeaten 35 for Adam Harrison saw the hosts home with relative comfort.

Simon Phillips' figures of 2 for 21 and Lloyd Bruce's 2 for 54 were ultimately not enough for the visitors, as Barry lost by five wickets.

Barry Athletic second XI had better fortune on the weekend however, as they entertained Croesyceiliog on The Island.

The visitors batted first, compiling a score of 224 from their 45 overs which included an impressive 90 from Peter Mason.

But despite looking like a strong total, Barry reached 227 for 6 in reply, with Zeeshan's fine 84 not out helping give them the win by four wickets. Lewis Edwards took 4 for 36 for the visitors.

This weekend, the first team entertain Cardiff Central on The Island, while the second XI travel to Brecon. Both games are a 12.30pm start.
