BARRY Comprehensive School’s U16 football team are busy preparing to compete in The Gothia Youth World Cup in Sweden.

The tournament, the biggest of its kind in the world, has run for more than 40 years and will welcome over 1,800 teams from 80 countries next month.

The team took part in the tournament in 2015 and were extremely successful in reaching the latter stages.

They hope to emulate their performance this time around.

This year the team have group fixtures against English, Swedish and Spanish opposition before more fixtures in the knock out stage of the competition.

Local company ICD Roof Solutions have stepped forward to ensure the pupils look the part during the tournament and have provided the team with playing kit, hoodies, tracksuits and travel bags.

ICD Roof Solutions managing director Andrew Roberts presented the team with their new gear.

He said: “To be able to help out a local school football team when they are playing in such a prestigious tournament was something we felt we had to do. It is great to be involved with a team with so much potential.”

The team has been selected to represent Wales in the Olympic style opening ceremony in a stadium with a capacity of 50,00, and a live television audience in Sweden.

A spokesman for the school side said: “It is a great honour for all of the boys.”

The team travel to Sweden on Saturday July 15.
