BARRY Romilly Bowls Club once again has shown it’s inability to put games to bed when leading and again from what seemed an unassailable lead the ‘ROM’ had an
amazing collapse.
Blaenrhondda
Having twice played Blaenrhondda away from home in the Carruthers in last two years and losing both games the ‘ROM’ have been waiting for the opportunity to play them on their own rink to prove a point.
The game commenced with Romilly in confident mood and by the 5th fifth end ‘ROM’ had taken a fourteen 14-shot lead. From the 6th sixth to 10th ends Romilly continued to outplay their opposition going further clear by twenty six 26 shots. Rinks skipped by Graham Cogbill, Mel Newman and Fred Phillips were ahead by 10, 4 four and three 3 respectively on the 15th end with ‘ROMS’ other rink skipped by Jeff Wright just one shot behind the overall score was 70 – 54 in
Romilly’s favour.
With six ends left to play Romilly were in a commanding position so it seemed then the rink of Phillips began to fall apart dropping 16sixteen shots over the next five ends this coincided with Wright’s rink losing a further seven shots leaving the ‘ROM’ with a deficit of seven to recover unfortunately although the rinks of Cogbill and Newman won their games they couldn’t get enough shots to turn things around with Romilly eventually losing out by three shots 83 - 86.
Rink Scores, Romilly first –
J Wright 13 v 21 K Pugh
M Newman 23 v 18 Lewis
F Phillips 22 v 29 A Collings
G Cogbill 25 v 18 R Pugh.
