FOR THE LAST time this season, the Vale of Glamorgan Association Football League gathered at Jenner Park for cup finals.

Thursday, May 4was the Year 11 Final for the Junior Cup between Barry Athletic FC and Sully Sports FC.

Barry Athletic took a two goal lead into the second half.

Hopes of a Sully come back were dented with a Barry Athletic third goal a minute into the second half. Despite a spirited fight back from Sully Barry Athletic went on to get a further three goals. Final Score Barry Athletic FC 6-0 Sully Sports FC. Barry Athletic Goal Scorers; Joe Allwood, Luke Vowles, Harri Edwards, Rhys Woolmer and Cian McArthur-Williams (2).

The following night – Friday, May 5– the Year seven Final took place for the Brian Riseborough Memorial Cup between league Champions Cowbridge Town Reds and Cowbridge Town Blacks. Cowbridge Town Reds took the lead on the fourth minute but Cowbridge Town Blacks pulled level on the 18th minute leaving the game balanced at 1-1 at half time.

A tight second half saw Cowbridge Town Blacks take the lead thanks to an own goal.

Whilst the game looked over Cowbridge Town Reds managed to get the equalizer putting the game into Extra Time; however no further goals were scored meaning a penalty shootout was required. Cowbridge Town Blacks had their first three penalties saved.

Cowbridge Town Reds scored missed and scored their third to put themselves in control. Cowbridge Town blacks scored their fourth but Cowbridge Town Reds scored their fourth to win the shootout 3-1 making them Double Champions.

An overcast morning on Sunday, May 7 saw the final Junior Cup Final take place. The Year nine Final for the Harry Gratton Trophy was between League Champions and SWFA Under 14 Cup Winners Barry Town United FC and Dinas Powys Wolves who were League Runners Up.

Dinas Powys Wolves took the lead via Kyle Booker goal after seven minutes.

Barry Town FC got back into the game on the 25th minute making it one a piece at half time. However, the second half was all Barry Town United thanks to four goals making the final score Barry Town United FC 5-1 Dinas Powys Wolves.

Barry Town United FC goal scorers were Joseff Rosser and Niall Chinn (4).

After an overcast morning, the sun manager to sign for the final cup final, the prestigious Barry Cup which was between the Premier Division Champions Vale United FC and League Runners Up AFC Rhoose.

Vale United thought they took the lead on the fifth minute only for the goal to be ruled off side.

The first booking of the match went to Vale United after a late tackle. Vale United were edging the game slightly and nearly took the lead on the 19th minute with a ball across the box but no attacking player followed up to put the ball into the net.

AFC Rhoose finally got themselves into the game with the game’s first goal on the 35th minute with a goal from Chris Bolton.

A minute later though the game was seemingly turned on its head with a red card for AFC Rhoose.

A late tackle saw the Vale United Captain injured and substituted, after deliberation between the Referee and Referee Assistant saw Dale Bevan sent off for AFC Rhoose. Whilst seemingly a game changer AFC Rhoose managed to keep in the game and hold back Vale United only for their hard work to be undone by a long range effort by Rhys Edwards. A long chip from 25 yards saw the ball strike the bar only to re-bound of the leaping Scott McMillan’s (AFC Rhoose Goalkeeper) hands and go into the back of the net. So, for the third final in a row, the half time score was 1-1. AFC Rhoose battled hard to keep in the game and catch Vale United on the break for goals in the second half but Vale United put the game to bed with two goals in the 61st and 73rd minutes from Alex Gregory and Jay Tominey respectively. Final Score; AFC Rhoose 1 – 3 Vale United. As is traditional with the Barry Cup, a Man of the Match is picked and receives the Brian Riseborough Golden Boot award; this year the honour was bestowed upon Vale United’s Joe Williams. This win made Vale United FC treble champions with the League Shield, League Cup and Barry Cup. They now go into the SWFA playoffs for promotion to the Alliance League for the 2017/18 season.
