Caldicot Town 1

Barry Town United 3

CONTINUING their quest for championship honours, Barry Town United went top of Welsh League Division One on Saturday, with a workmanlike 3 - 1 win at promoted Caldicot Town.

On an afternoon that saw the nation’s attention diverted by the chase for the oval ball, the Jenner Park side kept their focus at Jubilee Way to record a fourth consecutive win on their travels.

With manager Gavin Chesterfield resting skipper James Saddler, midfielder Louis Gerrard maximised his inclusion by opening the scoring from the penalty spot and while the home side would bag an equaliser in the 38th minute, Gerrard restored the visitors’ advantage into the second half.

With Caldicot accruing a slew of bookings and losing their goalkeeper to a sending off, Barry then drew a line under the encounter as TJ Nagi added their third, securing the three points that lifted them to the summit, after previous leaders Goytre crashed to a 4 - 1 defeat at Caerau Ely.

This Saturday, the Town will travel to the CCB Centre of Excellence in Ystrad Mynach to tackle Risca United, while Goytre welcome Ton Pentre to Plough Road, hoping to get their own title tilt back on track, ahead of an enticing Barry versus Goytre showdown at Jenner Park seven days later.

With only three points separating the current top four, Barry supporters will also be keeping an eye on events at Cambrian and Clydach and Port Talbot Town, although Gavin Chesterfield’s squad does have the cushion of at least one game in hand on each of the chasing pack.
