Cadoxton Barry 2 - Oaten

Penrhiwceiber Cons 0

IN THE opening moments of the match a through ball from Donnelly almost found Jackhontaw in a good position, but ultimately there was too much on it for the latter to reach.

Penrhiwceiber retaliated with a run down the right before the player cut in to see his shot go only a whisker wide of the opposite post. Then a foul on Oaten, as he surged towards the box, resulted in Adamson curling the free kick only just wide.

As the half progressed Penrhiwceiber began to look more dangerous, Cadoxton Barry 'keeper Warner doing well to gather a powerful snapshot from just inside the box. But the game turned in Cadoxton Barry's favour in the 23rd minute when Oaten intercepted a Penrhiwceiber pass just inside their half of the field.

He charged forward but was forced out to the left as he beat off two challenges. Then he skipped beyond the 'keeper's challenge to find that he was running out of space as the bye line to the left of the goal approached. So although the net was unguarded, he did very well to find the it from such an acute angle. And once Oaten had given Cadoxton Barry the lead.

There was to be only one occasion in the match that Cadoxton Barry looked like they would lose the lead which was a penalty later in the game.

A superb cross field passing movement saw the ball come to Adamson on the right from where his excellent cross to the far post saw Oaten heading only just wide of the far post.

Cadoxton Barry earned an early second half corner. It wasn't the best of corners and it was easily cleared.

But the ball came out to Adamson who quickly found Jackhontaw who avoided a couple of tackles before curling in a shot which the 'keeper was only able to parry, leaving Oaten to double his and Cadoxton Barry's tally from three yards out.

Cadoxton Barry were defending so well that there looked to be little likelihood of them losing this lead from open play.

But a Penrhiwceiber attack launched down the right saw the player running in along the bye line. Curran stretched to tackle and to put the ball out for what was expected to be a corner.

But the referee seemed to miss the clear contact made on the ball before the forward went to ground. So, reading it differently, he pointed to the spot.

However, justice was done when the penalty kick, though struck firm and low, rebounded back into play off Warner's right upright before being cleared to the relief and cheers of the home contingent.

Shortly after, Berry came on for Donnelly and immediately an excellent team passing move involving some clever play by Thompson ended with his shot going only just wide.

Penrhiwceiber's final chance of the game arrived as a result of a defensive mix up with Warner, originally out beyond the play, scuttling back to smoother the ball just in time. From then onwards Cadoxton Barry's solid rearguard of Weekley, Curran, Constant and Adamson ensured that Penrhiwceiber's periodic probing was to come to nothing.

In the gathering gloom Cadoxton Barry continued to press as further goals looked a possibility, Harris Raffel often prominent and Sansome solid at every stage. However, a stubborn Penrhiwceiber back line did well to ensure that the defeat remained within the realms of respectability.

Next Saturday, Cadoxton Barry take to the road to Ynyshir where they will meet Ynyshir Albions in a 2.30 kick-off.
