PHOENIX Freestyle held their annual inter-club martial arts competition and awards night to celebrate the third year of the club.

Fights were arranged on a round-robin basis according to age with each bout consisting of two rounds.

The winner of the under-10s category was Tegan Cain from Barry who put on a flamboyant display of kicking techniques along with an aggressive fighting style. Runner-up was Neve Edwards from Sully.

The under-13s category was won by Ioan Cain who put on a composed performance in all of his bouts.

Instructor, Michael Morgan, noted that Ioan is an accomplished fighter particularly with his hands.

Perhaps one of the standout bouts of the night was with Aaron Coborn, from Barry, who pressured Ioan throughout with some fantastic jumping and spinning kicks. Runner-up in this category was Joshua Edwards from Sully.

Winning the over-14s category was Joseph Hobbs from Sully. Joseph has made a lot of progress this year and put on a strong performance during his bout.

Runner-up was Cameron Edwards from Sully.

Other awards given out during the evening were for Most Improved Student and Student of the Year.

Jamie Davies won this award. Jamie is a very disciplined martial artist.

Student of the Year was awarded to Cameron Edwards for the second time in three years. Cameron is a good, technical martial artist who has been training at Phoenix Freestyle since the time it started and has grown in confidence throughout his time at the club.

Other mentions should also go out to Isabel Hobbs, from Sully, and Tom Clifton, from Dinas Powys, who have only been training for a couple months but showed confidence being part of the demonstration on the night.
