Cadoxton Barry 4 - Ynyshir Albion 6 - after extra-time

CB scorers: Thompson, Weekley, Sansome, Oaten

Ynyshir scorers: Anstee 4, Mason McGregor

CADOXTON Barry went forward confidently at the start but on two occasions Ynyshir breakaways ended with shots from wide going just outside the CB post. But first blood deservedly went to the home side as, from a Harris throw, Dawson cleverly back flicked the ball into the path of Thompson who sent in a powerful dipper of a shot that left the 'keeper stranded as it dropped in under the bar after 20 minutes.

An immediate thrust from the restart saw a one-on-one situation involving 'keeper Harker and an onrushing visiting forward, Harker just winning the race.

An inch perfect cross from Harris found Dawson with an open goal in front of him but his header went high and wide. Then, instead of being two up CB suddenly found themselves back to level pegging when Adamson was adjudged to have fouled in the box, the conversion being confidently completed.

Then Ynyshir missed a header from a similar situation to that of Dawson a little earlier. From the left by line near the half-way line Weekley curled a beautiful cross towards the far post where Oaten tried an overhead scissor kick that just failed to make contact.

It was becoming apparent that very few of the many crunching Ynyshir tackles were being penalised - indeed, on occasion, fouls on CB players were being rewarded with free kicks to the visitors. This helped Ynyshir to secure a series of corners, two of which saw CB being lucky to come away from unscathed.

Then Sansome lifted one over the top to find Oaten in the box. As he prepared to fire, a lunging tackle came in and although he managed to stay on his feet, it looked a stone wall penalty, though none was given and the score remained tied at half-time.

The second half started with a goal-a-piece within the first five minutes. The first went to Ynyshir as a run down the left thwarted a few CB challenges before, with Harker forward of his line, the player finished well with a high shot that dipped nicely into the net. However, within a couple of minutes things were level once more when a neat little Dawson pass into the path of Weekley saw him finish with a low long range drive.

Harris was replaced by Berry and one of his first pieces of action saw him exchanging passes with Morgan to engineer open space for Sansome to run into and drive home from the edge of the box with half an hour still to play.

But a slow reacting defence soon helped Ynyshir back on to level terms as, running in space down the left the winger slipped one forward into the path of his inside man who fired home into the far right of the CB net

The goal that should have been the CB winner also came from slack play - this time from Ynyshir - as a ball in from the right bounced through the 'keepers hand only to find Oaten waiting to the left to tap the ball in.

From this point CB took a stranglehold on the game, Sansome's high pass initiating an exchange of passes before Thompson's powerful blast was well blocked. Some further exchanges involving Berry, Morgan and Adamsom created a series of failed chances.

CB seemed to be in total control as Morgan and Oaten ran the clock with clever little keep ball exchanges and it looked to be all over for the visitors until a sequence of decision making heralded a turn of fortune for them.

In making a clearance on the left Eastman was scythed to the floor, studs showing. In anyone's book it should have been a straight red card but play was waved on. Eastman chased back, the loose ball having been picked up by the fouler. His attempt to reclaim may have been a tad late but nowhere near matched the magnitude of the foul he'd just succumbed to. Already on a yellow for a mild verbal comment made in the first half, a second yellow and a red was waved at him.

So instead of a CB free kick they saw one in favor of Ynyshir against a 10 man opposition. Donnelly tried to clear it but it glanced behind from his head where a forward was on hand to give it the little touch that earned the visitors a rather fortunate crack at 10 man Cadoxton Barry for the 30 minutes extra-time that was now to come. There had been just 20 seconds left when the goal was scored.

Territorially CB still continued to edge the possession, but gradually the extra man began to tell for the visitors, though on one occasion Harker had his shirt pulled all over the place after he had safely gathered. However the extra space that Ynyshir had was now beginning to tell when a long ball beat the off side trap to see the forward win out in a one-on-one as Harker advanced.

CB now had to push up in an effort to find an extra-time second half equaliser and that looked possible as Morgan advanced in the box only to be grounded brutally - yet still no penalty.

CB's frustration with the decision making was now visible as that 'what on earth else can we do to get something from this match' look engulfed their faces. And with frustrations high, the inevitable happened as the side that was second best for most of the game cemented their place in the second round with a further goal.

Next Saturday CB have a chance to regain some pride when they travel to Ynyshir for a league fixture. Kick-off at 2pm.
