BARRY Romilly Bowling Club men's section held their 2016 inter club competitions on Saturday, September 10, at Romilly Park.

Beginning at 9.30am the four wood pairs competition took place between the Bannister's, father Des along with son Alan who took on Kelvyne Mills and Graham Cogbill.

After 10 ends Mills and Cogbill had a 17 - 0 lead but the score did not reflect how close the ends were with Mills in particular playing well and the Bannister's unlucky on a number of ends.

The game changed completely on end 11 with the Bannister's scoring their first shot which was the catalyst for a comeback with the Bannister's taking nine of the next 10 ends to finally go down by just four shots 19 - 15.

Two more games were played at 12.30pm with the men's two wood competition between Alan Bryan and Clive Collins going to Collins 15 - 9. The other game was the Mottram Cup which featured Alan Bannister and Denis Mottram who's father presented the cup in honour of grandfather Henry Mottram who was involved with the Romilly Club in the early 1900s.

The game began with Mottram making the early running and leading 13 - 7 after 15 ends then the experience of Bannister, who took seven of the last eight ends to win 21 - 14.

The 3pm session included the Club Championship along with the Handicap and Tim Evans Cups.

The Handicap competition involved Jeff Coles and Alan Bannister who was playing his third game of the day. Both players were evenly matched and playing off scratch and the game was closely fought as expected with the score ending 21 - 17 in favour of Coles.

The Tim Evans Trophy was fought between club captain Mike Doyle and Des Bannister with Doyle holding the upper hand throughout winning comfortably 22 - 13.

The Club Championship was the final game of the day between Phil Gershenson and Graham Cogbill in ever improving weather. The game was expected to be a close affair with Cogbill the slight favourite and the score after five ends was 6 - 3 in favour of Cogbill.

Over the next five ends Gershenson began to find the line and length on a tricky green and took four of the five ends to take a 11 - 7 lead. Each of the ends 11 to 15 were only won by a single shot but it was Gershenson who maintained his lead increasing it 14 - 9.

The next four ends went in favour of the leader who now led 19 -10 but you can't take Cogbill for granted as he stormed back with two threes on ends 21 and 22 to narrow the score to 19 -16. That's as close as Cogbill got as Gershenson, already holding one, bowled a brilliant wood for shot and a two to win 21 - 16.

Congratulations must go to all bowlers who contested their games keenly making for exciting finals.
