CADOXTON Bowls Club hosted a CML 5 match against the current league leaders, Rhoose, which ended in a decisive victory for the home team on August 27. This brings them back into contention with a slight chance of promotion, with two matches still to play.

Howard Craven’s rink was the mainstay of the victory, with a crushing success. They restricted the opposition to just five singles whilst amassing 35 shots, 20 of which came in the last seven ends.

Roy Harding also had a significant win against Paul Williams’s rink, as did Don Kuhnell against Les Parsons. Arthur Field made his first team debut on this rink, and performed commendably.

Rhoose did have a winning rink with the Lages brothers combining to succeed against John Jones although John Pappoutsou gave good support to the home side.

On September 3, the president of the South Vale Bowling Association, David Fanning, was invited by his own club, Cadoxton to commemorate his presidency with a friendly match, at Victoria Park. The game was completed with both sides enjoying an amiable afternoon of bowls, in good weather. Each side finishing with two winning rinks, but the president’s team having a narrow lead with the aggregate.

Don Kuhnell skipped a successful rink against the president with a five shot advantage. John Jones was the skip against a strong rink from Romilly, and failed by the same score of five shots.

Gordon Davies skipped the other winning rink, the opposition coming from Millwood. Their two shot win did not cover the loss of nine shots by the rink on which Ceri Rossiter was a guest player and skipped by Howard Craven. The opposition came from Murch with Roger Mauchline as skip.

Cadoxton faced Abercynon in a CML 5 match on September 3, but the weather was not ideal for playing bowls, but as the season was coming to an end, the decision to play was made.

The game was curtailed to the minimum of 15 ends before the bedraggled teams called it a day, with hosts Cadoxton coming out on top with a close victory, against Abercynon.

John Jones had the best result on his rink with Ewan, Johnny Pap and Derek all overcoming the conditions creditably.

After trailing 6 - 4 on the sixth end they completed the game without conceding another shot. Roy Harding’s rink was closely contested with the scores level after 10 ends, and one shot behind with two ends left. They were successful on both these ends. Howard Craven looked to be having an easy win leading 17 – 4 after 12 ends, but in a shaky finish seven shots were conceded in the final three ends.

Jim Stacey had his best game for a number of weeks, with good close bowls regularly, but end after end the opposing second nestled inside them, which could not be dislodged. The outcome was a heavy defeat, but not enough to give the victory to the visitors.

Rink 1: W Craven, G Davies, I Robertson, H Craven 17 – 11

Rink 2: P Swannick, A Prince, D Brook, R Harding 12 - 10

Rink 3: E Heppenstall, J Pappoutsou, D Jeffries, J Jones 20 – 6

Final score: 55 - 48

On September 4, Cadoxton finalised their league programme with a re-arranged game at Cyfarthfa Castle in the CML 5. The previous day the green was flooded, so although it had drained it was still a bit soft.

Once again Howard Craven’s rink led the way with a good result on his rink. They took the lead on the third end and never succumbed throughout the game, although they only managed to have success in one of the final five ends.

John Jones struggled to start with his rink, and trailed 10 – 3 after six ends. With 13 ends played they still trailed by seven shots, but a good recovery brought them to within two shots on the penultimate end.

In a tense finish the home side managed to keep their loss on the final end to just one. Roy Harding also struggled in the opening ends, with the advantage of 10 - 2 going to the home side, by the eighth end.

A good period for the visitors reduced the deficit to two shots, after 14 ends. However the revival did not continue with just one further single added during the remaining ends.

Don Kuhnell’s rink completed a bad weekend with another heavy defeat.

Once again they were unable to reach double figures. Although Jim Stacey continued his improvement, with excellent close bowls, the opposing lead continuously got the upper hand. The outcome was a third place in the league, so no promotion this year

Rink 3: R Byrne, J Pappoutsou, D Jeffries, J Jones 18 - 17
