CADOXTON Bowls Club welcomed Bridgewater Bowls Club on August 21 for a friendly fixture.

The result of the annual match with Bridgwater was not important. The occasion was to celebrate the formation of the both clubs at the same time in 1908.

The event this year was played with mixed teams of ladies and men.

The weather was overcast but the rain stayed away and a good-humoured afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Old friendships from previous years were renewed, and new ones formed. The Bridgwater captain said on behalf of their team that they are already looking forward to the return visit next season.

The performance of youngster Ewan Heppenstall paid a major part in the success of the only winning Cadoxton rink, which was skipped by John Jones.

Father, Ian Heppenstall skipped a rink and couldn’t be bothered with singles. They scored two fives and two fours during their match.

Don Kuhnell’s rink looked as if they would never score, after a single on the opening end. However, late in the game an end was turned over from seven shots down to four up, to start a mini revival.

Derek Jeffries had a similar one shot start but it wasn’t until the 11th end before a five gave hope of a comeback, but a five was conceded two ends later.

David Fanning’s rink was successful on nearly half of the ends, but conceded a four and six during the game, which was the difference between the final scores. Gordon Davies skipped his rink to a one shot lead after eight ends, but a bad run of five defeats took away the ascendancy, and couldn’t recover.

Rink 2: Trisha Clarke, G Soloman, Moya Slee and D Jeffries 11 - 30

Cadoxton's game against Carfarthfa Castle in the ML5 was cancelled due to the flooded state of the green, which leaves a backlog of fixtures to complete with the season coming to an end shortly.
