ON SATURDAY, August 20, Barry Athletic Cricket Club entertained Ponthir at The Island Ground on a wet and windy afternoon.

Credit must go to both umpires, David Fiddler and Richie Rogers, along with Barry and Ponthir on playing the game and in doing so it benefitted both clubs in their quest for points.

It was also the only game in the top three divisions of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League to go ahead.

Ponthir won the toss and decided to bowl, with Gavin White and Steve Provis opening the batting for Barry and getting them off to a solid start putting 67 on for the first wicket before Provis went for 52.

Jones soon went for four, White (23) and Goodway (0) as Barry were reduced to 83 for 4. Baker went with the score on 105, Shae Ellis then played a confident knock as he added 51 runs with Griffett (18), Ellis ending up with 41 not out as Barry posted 163 for 7 in their 30 overs.

In reply, Ponthir lost their first wicket on 20 when Price was bowled by Frost for 15. Ponthir looked as if they were going to stroll to the target as they got 114 before they lost nine wickets for 43.

Peter Hellyar picked up 2 for 47 and Jake Griffett 3 for 36 being the main wicket takers and they were backed-up by Steve Provis who, after his 52 with the bat, bowled seven for just 19 runs and took a good catch before executing two direct hit run-outs as Barry ran out winners by just six runs and keeps their quest for a top two finish on target, with just three games left.

This weekend Barry 1st XI travel to top-of-the-table Malpas, with the 2nd XI playing the same opposition at home.
