A VALE golfer has continued an impressive season after winning the Southerndown Junior Open last week.

Ceri Vaughan Jones, 14, has previously won the Radyr Golf Club’s Captain’s Day prize alongside his father, Vaughan, before finishing just two shots behind the winner at the Pyle and Kenfig Junior Open.

Ceri, who is taught by St Andrews Major Golf Club professional John Hastings, won the recent open with a 79 gross despite the difficult weather conditions.

His latest success has catapulted him close to the top of the Glamorganshire Under-14's Order of Merit with two events remaining this year and will bring his handicap down to 12.

Even with a triple bogey seven due to a lost ball on the formidable 18th hole his score was enough to secure top spot and confirmed his steady progress.

Talking about Ceri’s success, coach Hastings, who runs the Natural Golf Academy at St Andrew’s, said: “Ceri's aptitude for the game was evident from a very early age but his equally impressive mental game is also one of his strength's.

“His ability to never let a bad shot unsettle him gives him an edge over his fellow competitors”.

A regular in the Glamorganshire Under-14's County Team, Ceri is also a member at Radyr Golf Club and has now set his sights on a single figure handicap, a goal both he and his coach set themselves at the beginning of the year.
