SPECIAL Olympics Wales held its regional golf tournament last week at St Andrews Major Golf Club in Barry.

Golfers from across the UK attended the day with Vale AM Jane Hutt welcoming participants before officially opening the tournament.

Ms Hutt, a big supporter of the event, said: "It was a great event to open. Everyone seemed really buoyed up by British success in recent sporting events. Long may it continue."

Also showing their support were St Andrews Major Golf club members who turn out to caddy and act as scorers for the golfers.

Tee off was under the control of golf professional John Hasting who also coaches at the Barry club.

A number of Barry golfers enjoyed success during the day with a number of competitions taking place.

The 18 hole competition was won by Warren Clark from Surrey, second was Barry's Sam Lazenbury and third place was Matthew Sims from Cardiff.

Nine hole division one was won by Barry golfer Matthew Prewett, then there were three golfers on the same score so on count back it was second Creg Friend (Surrey), third Mark Eveleigh (Barry) and fourth James Savory (Barry).

The nine hole division two was again won by a Barry golfer, this time it was Gareth Lloyd who secured the top spot. In second was Elliott Lee (West Midlands) and third was Adrian Abbott (Llantwit Major).
