BARRY Athletic Bowls Club upset the odds in their second league game of the season as they defeated Aberdare Harlequins away from home.

Harlequins were last season's formidable force as they won everything they entered, including the private greens league and the highly decorated Carruthers Shield.

However, Barry went into the game still feeling confident of securing a shock result despite their narrow loss in match day one at home to Ely Valley.

The Barry rink of Gwynfor Parr, Jack Killin, Richard Bowen and David Wright produced a great comeback from dropping a full house of eight shots early on to secure top rink honours, winning 27-13 in the process.

There was also impressive wins for the rinks skipped by Glyn Thomas and Mark Thomas. The final away quartet skipped by Robert Horgan battled their way to a draw against ex-Welsh international Gareth Hughes, meaning Barry Athletic picked up 13 points out of a maximum of 14 available.

Rink scores:

G Parr, J Killin, R Bowen and D Wright 27-13

P Killin, D Jones, D Rees and G Thomas 19-15

G Gane, G Whittaker, P Rogers and R Horgan 20-20

M Clarke-Squires, P Webley, C Wright and M Thomas 20-18

Barry Athletic 86 - Harlequins 66

The Athletic will now switch their attention to their 2016 Carruthers campaign as they welcome Maesteg Celtic to Barry Island on Saturday.
