BARRY RFC finally completed their Division 2 East Central league season last Wednesday with a win at Clwb Rugby Caerdydd to confirm their third place in the table, a magnificent achievement in their first season at this level.

In what can only be described as a fast and open game, Barry entertained the crowd with a fine display of running rugby ably assisted by their opponents who joined the party to give the season a send off it deserved.

The match started at a frantic pace with both sides attacking and defending at every opportunity and after Barry had been forced to defend in the early minutes they took the lead.

Following a lineout Barry spread the ball for Perry to make a decisive break creating space for White to cross for the try which went unconverted with the swirling wind making life difficult for the kickers.

Barry had shown their intent and continued attacking from all parts of the field with good handling skills and only solid defending from Clwb kept them out.

Clwb were quick to take advantage of Barry errors and looked dangerous on the counter attack and all Barry's defensive qualities were needed.

After being on the receiving end for a time, Barry turned Clwb over from a drop out and again set the backs into action and fine hands saw the ball reach Adams to cross for the second try which had begun 70 metres back. The kick was unsuccessful but Barry had a 10 point lead.

The work of the Barry eight on the floor was exceptional, creating turnovers enabling Barry to play on the front foot and continue to threaten the hard working Clwb defence.

This is not to say it was one way traffic and had Barry's first up tackling not been at its best Clwb could well have scored on more than one occasion. As it was they were rewarded from a penalty after 30 minutes to make the score 10-3.

With the game so open either side looked likely to get the next score but after Clwb had spurned a good chance it was Barry who went further ahead after quick ball from loose play saw the ball move across the line for White to get his second try and with the extras added by Barross to give Barry a 14 point advantage at half-time.

Barry began the second half in the same vein as the first and launched attacks from the off creating chances, but not getting that important final pass to hand. They also had to contend with counter attacks from Clwb who were not ready to lie down and continued to threaten and keep Barry on their toes.

After weathering a series of Clwb attacks Barry were to go further ahead as a scrum against the head enabled them to spread the ball quickly creating the space for Jones to cross for an unconverted try.

The next 10 minutes belonged to Clwb as they suddenly found some space in the Barry defence and scored two tries in as many minutes to reduce the deficit to seven points after 60 minutes.

Barry's game became more cautious as they strove to defend their lead and the reliable left boot of Barross ensured that Clwb were having to attack from deep.

Changes in the Barry side were made and soon after they were awarded a penalty kicked by Barross to provide a cushion.

An outstanding feature in the team this year has been its strength in the last part of the match as was obvious in the last two recent wins and it seems they enjoy living on a knife edge.

So it was this week as they applied pressure on the Clwb defence in the end forcing it to concede a further penalty again kicked by Barross for 13 point lead.

The pressure continued as a penalty put Barry back on Clwb's 22 where a good line out saw Evans burst through from midfield to cross for an excellent try, converted by Barross to make the score 35-15 with only minutes left.

There was still time for one more score which saw Clwb reduce the lead with a converted try and brought an end to the game which finished 35-22.

A fine end to what has been a hugely successful season for Barry, who after losing three of their first four fixtures, have lost only three times in the remaining 18, with two of those being against runaway league winners Porth.

We must congratulate all of the players, superbly led by James Hadfield, who have produced performances

throughout the season for which they should be proud and that have achieved so much for both themselves and the Club.

What happens on the field is usually an indication of what happens off it, and for that reason we must recognise the enormous part played by the coaching team of Jon Bryant, Liam and Rhyddian Scott in the success the team has had this year. Roll on 2016-17.

The winning numbers for this week were 2, 4, 17 and 20 which did not produce a winner.

Next week's prize will be £2,040.
