BLUE skies and sunshine greeted the competitors in the Mixed Open at Wenvoe Castle last Sunday.

The course was in superb condition and reflected the considerable efforts of head green keeper Mark Wilshire and his team who were out early in the morning ensuring the presentation of the course, particularly the greens, was of the highest standard.

The high entry competed for prizes which were awarded to both visitors and Wenvoe Castle members many of whom played particularly well given the possible influence of the Captain’s Inaugural Ball which was held the previous evening.

An impressive score of 39 points by Ian Riley and Cath Robins from Dinas Powis Golf Club won the visitors prize. Second place went to Dave Bryant and Sally Kudahl of St Pierre Golf Club with another good score of 36 points.

The Wenvoe Castle member’s prize was a very close contest with Alan and Fran Grant posting the winning score of 38 points. Joff Williams and Barbara Beedham also scored 38 points and were just squeezed into second place by a countback on the final six holes.

In the ball sweep there was just a single two scored throughout the day and Sally Kudahl added to her winnings by scooping the pot of 30 balls.

Club captain Paul Coombs paid particular thanks to the visitors and club members who had supported the competition and made special mention of the contribution of the greenkeepers and the bar and catering staff who had worked tirelessly through the day.

Lady captain Sandra Hathway presented the prizes and also praised the work of the club staff and gave special thanks to Wendy Motton for her hard work and very efficient administration of the competition throughout the day.

There are still some spaces to enter a team in the Captain’s Charity Day on Saturday, May 28 and all proceeds are to the captain’s nominated charity Cancer Research Wales. For details please contact club secretary Nicola Sims on 02920 594371.
