LLANTWIT Major Youth completed an amazing league and cup double by beating Sully Sports 3-2 in a pulsating game on Sunday afternoon.

Llantwit had secured the West League Championship the previous week, scoring well over 100 goals in the process. Sully had won their equivalent South League which made for a mouth-watering cup final at the home of Sully FC.

Llantwit started the game strongly and made use of the windy conditions and should have gone ahead early on when Richard Stephens forced a point blank save from Sol Board when through on goal.

In a cagey first 30 minutes both sides struggled to get the upper hand with Sully looking dangerous on the break and Llantwit finding it hard to break down a resolute Sully defence. Llantwit then lost the influential Luke Allison through injury and he was replaced by the pacey Lloyd James.

The game sparked into life in the 35th minute, Gabe Oram played an inch perfect pass which was brought down and volleyed into the back of the net by Levi Rees from the edge of the area. The same player then dribbled past three players and passed the ball into the net to double Llantwit’s lead before rounding off a superb five minute hat-trick by lobbing the 'keeper from an acute angle to make the half-time score 3-0.

The second half saw Sully putting pressure on Llantwit with the help of a strong wind. The Llantwit defence of Thomas Jones, Harvey Stockford and Sean Sutton initially stood firm until a needless penalty was conceded and dispatched by the impressive Will Gale, who caused problems all game due to his pace.

Llantwit were still creating chances on the counter attack and went close on a number of occasions with Ash Thomas heading just over after some neat wide play. Llantwit’s 'keeper Jonny Harvey was then forced into a great acrobatic save to keep the game in Llantwit’s control before Sully scrambled the ball home with 10 minutes to go to set up a nervy finish for the Llantwit supporters.

Fresh legs were brought on by Llantwit in the form of Harry Lambert and Josh Lewis replacing the impressive Matt Clay and Rich Stephens. Sully threw everything at Llantwit for the remainder of the game and peppered the Llantwit goal mouth with numerous crosses.

Llantwit however were not going to let this one slip and held on for a deserved win. The Llantwit Major captain James Scott was presented with the cup ensuring some well-earned celebrations for what was a hard fought battle against a very good Sully side.

The cup final marked a fitting end to not only a fantastic season but a decade of success for a great bunch of lads, some of whom have been with the club since the age of six. The club would also like to thank The Colcot Arms for their hospitality after the game.
