SULLY Bowls Championship Team travelled to Bridgend on Saturday, November 21, to play Ogwr at the Indoor Bowling Green in the Leisure centre.

Sully were expecting a win as Ogwr are in a transitional period having lost a number of their star players therefore Sully were looking for wins on most rinks.

Sully were in for a shock before the game began as the arena was so cold as the heating system was not working, in fact the system was blowing out cold air.

The game began with Sully players wearing any tops or coats they could bowl in but this didn't stop them taking an eight shot lead after five ends, with four rinks ahead. From ends six to 10 Sully were maintaining their form and had gone further by the end of the tenth leading by 14 shots 69 - 55.

Ken McLeod's rink was struggling against the Ogwr rink skipped by Jim Hoskins and were adrift by eight shots, whilst the rinks of Fred Phillips, Brian Griffiths and Chris Ackland were level with their opponents.

It was the rink of Graham Cogbill, Gary Eastment, Mike Doyle, skipped by the reliable Brian Foscolo and Martin Clarke-Squires rink who were ensuring the Sully lead. As the game progressed it was still Foscolo's and Clarke-Squires rinks enabling Sully to stay ahead, each leading by 22 shots and 13 shots respectively, whilst Sully's other four rinks were fighting hard to gain the initiative with the overall score at the 15th end 90 - 78 in Sully's favour.

Sully were now out of their comfort zone, only leading by a dozen shots with four of the six rinks behind going into the final six ends. It was now going to be a battle in the minds of the Sully players from being super confident of a good win. The pressure was now on to hold onto a lead that Ogwr were eating into.

The 16th end saw Sully take eight shots across the rinks to move 20 shots ahead and ease the pressure but the rinks of Chris Ackland, Brian Griffiths and Ken McLeod lost more

ground on their opponents over the closing ends, with Fred Phillips rink having a tremendous tussle with Ogwr skip Brian Tucker over the last few ends with the Sully rink finally succumbing by three shots.

The rinks of Ackland, Griffiths McLeods also failed to get to grips with their opponents losing their games by seven, six and six shots respectivlely.

Fortunately Foscolo's rink won decisively by 27 shots 32 - 5 whilst Clarke-Squires rink also had a resounding win by 16 shots 29 - 13. As a result of these two rinks Sully gained an overall win 128 - 107 although gaining 14 points out of 22 on offer their was a slight disappointment that more rinks had failed to gain more points but the win places Sully just eight points behind leaders Taff Ely and two points behind second placed Newport and both clubs have to come to Sully in the New Year.
