IN SOME of the worst weather conditions seen for a long time, Barry entertained Abercynon in a league fixture last Saturday.

Despite the strong winds and driving rain which prevailed for most the afternoon the match itself proved to be entertaining with both sides committed to an open game of rugby whenever possible.

Barry faced the elements in the first half and set their stall out early by bringing the backline into play regularly to threaten the away defence and gain territory. This tactic met with early success as a break by Scott from the home 22 found White who made good ground before being tackled. With the ball being quickly recycled Hadfield found the space to cross for the opening score which went unconverted, not surprising in the conditions.

Abercynon also had their moments and spent some minutes in home territory but a combination of greasy ball and a solid defence prevented them from opening their account.

Hadfield was forced to leave the field to injury being replaced by O'Sullivan.

The half-time whistle went with no more scores, but Barry were good value for their lead and were happy to turn round with the elements in their favour for the second half.

Vidal replaced Ring at the start as Barry camped in the visitors 22 and despite the pressure Abercynon made it difficult for them to create any chances. In fact in the opening 10 minutes Barry had little possession of any quality.

The deadlock was broken when Baros sent a penalty from some 50 metres straight between the posts to increase the lead to 8-0.

Meaning the visitors would need to score twice, Barry used the conditions to their advantage to continually pin the opposition back.

Ryan and Perry came on to replace Jones and Scott closely followed by G Jones for Poole.

With conditions worsening by the minute the game became scrappy but dominated by Barry and it seemed only a matter of time before they would score.

The forwards were setting a platform for the backs and it was Perry who finally found the space to cross for a try which was duly converted by Baros.

Minutes later the same player crashed through the defence for his second try. Baros again adding the extras.

Seeking the bonus point for the fourth try Barry threw everything into attack and came close on several occasions but couldn't achieve it, with the whistle going leaving Barry winners by 22-0.

Next Saturday sees Barry entertain Llantrisant at 2.30pm. Following that match the Club Christmas Draw will take place. Would those still holding tickets please return them to the club as soon as possible, they can be left with Carol at the bar.
