BARRY RFC Vets answered an SOS from Argentinian Vets touring side Champagnat, of Buenos Aires, and entertained them in a hastily arranged fixture on Thursday, September 24.

Barry RFC's guests had requested a touch fixture due to the average age of their team. An experienced team assembled at the Reservoir Field pitch and the match kicked off. The pace of the game was frantic and both sides entered into the spirit of the touch game.

It was clear that Prosser, Gibbon and Scott had played together before with their excellent link up play and off loads. They were admirably assisted by the returning Pugh, debutant Nation and Grieg.

The forwards also showed excellent slight of hand from Lee Turnbull, Lee David, Lee Jones, Baz Dyer and Evans. Special thanks to Chris Evans who travelled down specially from Liverpool to don the green and white shirt again.

The hosts were bolstered by the slightly late appearance of 'Mowli' Macarthur and he played well as did all the Vets.

Champagnat struck first and the game was levelled by a sniping chopper try after excellent link up play. The hosts found themselves behind again but levelled after numerous infringements from the tourists. The hosts were kept on their toes by a very nimble teenager Martine and a couple of younger visitors.

A two-all draw ended the game appropriately and both sides retired for showers, the buffet, singing and numerous beverages. Both teams enjoyed the New Zealand versus Namibia game.

Rugby was the winner on the night, new friendships were made and Barry RFC Vets/club have been invited out to Buenos Aires in the future for a return fixture. An offer they will undoubtedly take up.

Team: Frank Greig, Gerwyn Pugh, Darran Gibbon, Lee Jones, Richard Rendell, Paul Macarthur, Andrew Prosser, Rhidian Scott, Chris Evans, Lee Turnbull, Baz Dyer, Lee David, Jon Nation and Andrew Moffat

Thanks to all the players and especially the referee Peter Griffiths, Carol Jones for organising the buffet and Barry RFC for their support.

Good luck to Marcos Videla and their new friends, Champagnat.
