ROMILLY Bowls Club are on the verge of winning two League Titles with the ‘A’ team already promoted from the 5th Division and as league Champions.

Also, the Club side are almost there requiring a full points win against Caerphilly at home this Saturday to guarantee them the title.

With second placed St Joseph’s losing at Ferndale 12 – 2 putting them out of the race it is now left to Troedyrhiw who are 15 points behind but still have a game in hand to upset

Romilly’s dreams.

After a setback against Troedyrhiw in their last game Romilly were eager to get their title ambitions back on track.

Gelli Park have always been a dangerous side to play against as they have the potential in their side to cause an upset or at least take some points off you.

On Saturday Gelli were late arriving at Romilly Park due to unavailability of some players which included their star man Spencer Wiltshire and had to play one rink as a triple.

Romilly were keen to get the game started and obtain an advantage whilst the visitors were trying to settle and over the first five ends Romilly duly took full advantage going into a 12 shot lead.

As the game progressed the ‘Rom’ surged further ahead leading by 27 shots at the end of the tenth with all rinks ahead. Even at the half-way stage Romilly were in a comfortable position and were confident they would win the match but were mindful that they required a win on all rinks to gain maximum points.

By the 15th end all rinks were still ahead especially the rink of Jeff Wright who were playing against the triple and leading by 20 shots 28 – 8.

Over the final six ends the Romilly players were in no mood to take their feet off the gas and continued to out bowl their opponents for a resounding win by 74 shots 121 – 47 taking the 14 points as required.

Romilly ‘A’ travelled to Birchgrove in Cardiff to play St Joseph’s ‘A’, they were already promoted but required just one point to go up as Champions.

Although St Joseph’s were at the wrong end of the table they are always fighters therefore the ‘Rom’ could not afford to rest on their laurels.

The home team gained the early initiative taking an eight shot advantage over the first five ends but the ‘Rom’ weren’t too concerned as they only needed that one rink to win or draw.

As the game continued Romilly were struggling on all rinks with only the rink of Andrew Hacher drawing 8 – 8 whilst the other three rinks were slightly behind approaching

the 11th end.

By the 15th end Romilly had turned the tables and the rinks of Roger and Howard Jones were now leading by three shots and one shot respectively but Hacher’s rink had fallen four behind whilst Tony Freeman’s rink were 11 down against the home rink skipped by Brian O’Keefe who was in superb form.

Romilly although behind overall at the start of the 16th end 45 – 54 were now a little concerned as they still needed those couple of points and with Freeman’s rink well down all the other rinks were too close to call.

The Romilly players were not playing with their normal confidence and it appeared the pressure of winning the league had got to them as over the last six ends Freeman’s rink

continued to struggle finally losing by 17 shots. The other rinks remained tight affairs with Howard Jones and Hacher’s rinks having titanic battles but finally succumbing by two

shots and one shot respectively.

With Romilly still short of the points required for the league title it looked as if they would have to rely on scores elsewhere but the experienced rink of Jeff Coles, Bryn Gough, Paul Williams and Roger Jones won the day winning the last four ends and gained the two points required to give Romilly their first League Title.

The overall result was a 12 shot defeat 64 – 76 with Romilly getting those vital two points to the ‘Joe’s' 12 points.
