CADOXTON Bowls' match at Abercynon decided whether promotion would be achieved or not. Once again they were unable to finish although they were in front until the penultimate end.

Throughout the game each side had two winning and two losing rinks but the Cadoxton winners always had enough shots to cover the other two, until the lead was lost on the 20th end, by two shots. It was still the same difference at the end.

Kelvin Chedgzoy, standing in as skip instead of the absent Roy Harding had a superb result with his rink. They failed on just six ends from scoring and led throughout to complete a 20 shot success.

John Jones skipped the other successful rink. After conceding a four on the first they were soon in front and built a 25 – 8 shot lead by the 17th end. Unfortunately, that was the end of their lucrative ends and they conceded 11 shots on the final run in.

The other two rinks skipped by Don Kuhnell and Howard Craven were unable to stem the flow of regular shots against, and although they were covered for most of the game their losses were eventually too much.

J Stacey, D Evans, G Davies and D Kuhnell 12 –27

P Swannick, A Prince, P Ellis and K Chedgzoy 29 – 9

S Clarke, I Robertson, D Brook and J Jones 25 –19

W Craven, L Adams, D Jeffries and H Craven 9 –27

75 – 82

The complete turnout did not last long, for the Cadoxton ‘A’ side despite their win last week. They were three players short again, for the visit of Ystrad Mynach ‘A’.

They did produce one winning rink, a triple skipped by Howard Hellyar. The match was close throughout with the scores level on one, six, eight and nine. Four winning singles on the final ends ensured the victory.

Alan Carpenter skipped a rink with the four players, and after 12 ends were close at 9-11, but a six and four took the chances away, which was eventually shattered with a seven on the last.

David Fanning’s triple was successful on the opening few ends but never come to terms, after a scoreless run during the following eight ends. Dennis Hammond also started well with his triple, by taking a 3-1 advantage. By the tenth end there was just a two shot deficit. However eight shots were scored against during four more ends to squash any hopes.

R Cole, R Morris and D Fanning 12 – 22

G Garland, R Byrne and H Hellyar 16 – 14

S Clements, G Solomon and D Hammond 13 – 19

G Powell, J Smart, A Field and A Carpenter 11 – 32

52 - 87

Due to the completion of the Munro Cup a friendly was arranged with Llantwit Major on Wednesday, August 19. However this was washed out with heavy rain.
