South Wales Alliance Division One

AFC Bargoed 0

Cadoxton Barry FC 3 - Thompson 2, Oatten

CADOXTON Barry threw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at Bargoed from the kick off, taking just eight minutes to get their noses in front, when a Walsh free kick was well met by the head of Thompson.

It took 60 seconds to replace the ball and re-start and it took just a further 12 for Oatten to receive the ball, run at the home goal and double the lead with a shot from the left that ended up in the far corner of the net.

Just six more minutes had passed when Thompson chased down a long ball on the left before skirting round the advancing 'keeper and then the covering defender to slide it into the net.

Gradually Bargoed played their way into matching CB territorially and then to mount a spell of pressure in the 15 minutes leading up to half-time. However, a quality save from Harker and some commanding headed clearances from Curran ensured that Bargoed had nothing to show from their exertions.

The pressure continued into a second half and, if anything, became more intense, the half being nearly 15 minutes old before CB mounted any serious attack. It was an attack which saw Weekley latching on to a long ball forward, but the final shot was well over.

Adamson, who had been excellent on the right wing suffered a back injury and had to be replaced by Sam Williams after 63 minutes and by small degrees CB began to push the Bargoed onslaught back. Though they had been under pressure CB had created some golden opportunities on the break, all of which were spurned - a chance into an open goal being fired wide in the dying seconds.

All in all though, this was a fine first win in the newly formed South Wales Alliance. Previously Neil White detected a slight frailty at the back, highlighting a lack of communication as a possible cause. However that was nowhere in sight as, collectively, it rose to the task in the second half, limiting Bargoed onslaught to fewer chances the visitors created on the break.

Cadoxton Barry FC 2nds 3 - Fiddler (G), Dalton, Hopkins (R)

After falling behind, Fiddler levelled things up with a cleaver back heel into the net from a corner. CB fell behind yet again for Dalton to set off on a solo run into the box before striking for home from 10 yards. The 'keeper parried the shot but Dalton did well to return the tricky rebound into the net.

The winner started with some neat interplay between Taylor and Hopkins for the latter to beat the last man and tap home.

For CB the twin centre halves of Eastman and new signing Will Powell were outstanding. The roving Kieron Macarthy also caught the eye along with Joe Hudson and Scott Christopherato.
