TWO of the top teams clashed at Victoria Park when Cadoxton Bowls Club hosted a CML 6 match against Llantrisant which could possibly decide the league winners.

The match lived up to the expectations and with neither side giving much away the scores stayed close throughout the game.

Cadoxton were slightly in front for most of the game and by the sixth end the advantage was 10 shots with all four rinks in front. This difference stayed about the same until the 13th with three rinks up and the advantage still 10.

Unfortunately, four bad ends left them trailing, by three shots, with two rinks up and two down.

After the 18th end the scores were level, and Cadoxton took a four shot lead on the next. On the penultimate end the scores were level once more.

The now vital last end brought two wins for each side but sadly Roy Harding, leading by two, attempted to trail the jack for four shots turned an opposing bowl in to give them two shots and tie the rink.

Howard Craven leading by four on his rink conceded a two. John Jones rink reduced a three shot deficit with a single. This left the last rink on, skipped by Don Kuhnell, to make three to tie the rink and the game.

Both skips had a bowl left, with an open head and the closest bowl a yard or more away from the jack. The visiting skip drew the shot with his final bowl.

The third, Gordon Davies, called for it to be taken out as Cadoxton probably were holding three second shots.

Both teams were eagerly awaiting the outcome and a loud cheer came from the Cadoxton team as the bowl was removed but unluckily it hit into the Cadoxton bowls and only one shot was credited to Cadoxton. This was only the second time during the game that Cadoxton were behind.

H Hellyar, I Robertson, G Davies and D Kuhnell 21 –23

P Swannick, D Evans, K Chedgzoy and R Harding 18 –18

S Clarke, P Ellis, D Brook and J Jones 15 – 17

G Solomon, L Adams, D Jeffries and H Craven 16 –14

70 – 72

Following selection the Cadoxton ‘A’ side had a full team and a reserve, but unfortunately by the time match day came around, this luxury was depleted once again.

The 14 stalwarts, however, turned up to travel to Splott, with smiling faces ready to enjoy the afternoon, come what may.

Unfortunately the enthusiasm did not bring good results. One rink skipped by Ian Heppenstall, and supported by Stan Clements, Ray Morris and captain Dennis Hammond were level on the penultimate end but a single took away the glory.

J Stacey, R Cole and L Davies 13 – 18

E Heppenstall, R Byrne and D Fanning 7 – 31

S Clements, R Morris, D Hammond and I Heppenstall 16 – 17

G Powell, J Smart, A Prince and A Carpenter 7 – 38

43 - 104

A weak Cadoxton side hosted a Munro Cup match against Llantwit Major and were heavily defeated.

The scores were tied at 5-5 on the rink skipped by John Jones against Graham Jones, after eight ends. However the next four ends decided the result in the visitor’s favour, when 10 shots were conceded.

Paul Swannick playing in the unaccustomed role as skip against Eric Sparkes was also tied at 7-7 at the half way stage. The chance of success, for the home side disappeared with two fives conceded in the closing stages.

Howard Craven met opposing skip Steve Booker and after an early five against could not get back into contention when a further five and three threes settled the result.

Ivor Robertson was the skip of the final rink against Neville Young and never got into the game with just four winning ends.
