BARRY Town United ran out 3-1 friendly winners at Abergavenny Town on the weekend, as the clock ticks ever closer towards the start of the new domestic season.

The Welsh League Division Two champions took the lead inside the first 10 minutes at Pen-y-Pound Park, as James Dixon edged past his man and lifted the ball beyond the Abergavenny goalkeeper.

After a spectacular own goal gifted the visitors a second, the home side hit back through Dan Jenkins; only for a fine, long-range strike from Barry skipper James Saddler to restore his team's two-goal advantage.

The 150 or so spectators then witnessed a goalless second half, as Gavin Chesterfield's team prepared for Tuesday evening's Gary Lloyd Cup match with another positive result.

Last Tuesday, the Town had trailed for much of their friendly with Trethomas Bluebirds, as Chesterfield cast his eye over several trialists.

In front of a healthy crowd at Bedwas RFC, Toby Spain's early strike looked to have secured an upset for the Gwent outfit, only for Barry's Drew Fahiya to secure a share of the spoils late on with a sharp strike to make it 1-1.

This Saturday, Barry make the long trip to Bridge Meadow Stadium to play Welsh Premier League newcomers Haverfordwest County (2.30pm kick-off).

The club will be running a coach to the match from Jenner Park, with supporters wishing to travel encouraged to contact club secretary David Cole on 07557 665 847 for availability.

Barry's final friendly before the competitive season will be against Llanwern at Newport Stadium the following Saturday, August 8.
