NOT only did Barry Sea Cadets host the South Wales District annual canoeing competition on Barry Docks on Sunday, June 7, but they emerged as the overall winners of the event.

Barry Sea Cadets have been training hard under civilian instructor Teilo Richardson who qualified as a canoe instructor last year. They were, however, disappointed when the District Training scheduled for Saturday was called off due to high winds.

Despite this they went on, during the competition on Sunday, to win five out of the eight events and took the overall prize by two points.

Prizes were presented by Lt Cmdr Stephen Daniels RNR who congratulated all of the cadets, many of whom will now go on to represent South Wales at the Area Canoeing Competition in Bristol Docks.

PO Dean Crapnell commanding officer of the Barry Sea Cadet Unit said, “We had a fantastic result today, showing the excellent training done by CI Richardson. Special mention must go to Cadet Platts A who persevered in the marathon event and came a very creditable second, inspiring the whole team. They all did really well.”

Barry Sea Cadets parade on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and are currently looking for volunteers who can help with delivering activities for young people.
