THE busy golf season is well under way at Wenvoe Castle with a flurry of competitions and two Open days held within the space of a week.

The first was the Mixed Open and attracted a large entry from throughout the region. The weather was kind and the course as usual in magnificent condition.

The top score for visitors were the pairing of Irene Bridges and Stan Burford from Whitehall Golf Club who won with an impressive 40 points. Second place went to Ros and Don Llewellyn from Cardiff Golf Club with 38 points.

The Wenvoe Castle member’s prize went to Fran and Alan Grant with 39 points with Lynda and Rob Campbell just missing out with a score of 37 points.

The Ladies Open Day soon followed and there were real concerns about the weather on the day and the green staff went out early to give the course a helping hand to deal with exceptionally heavy overnight rain which continued into the morning. The work paid dividends as the sun finally shone through and the conditions for the competition were excellent.

Winning team for the visitors were Sheila Morrow, Shirley Morgan and Margaret Medlow with an impressive 78 points. Second in the group were Mary Burke, Rita Howells and Wendy Motton with 74 points.

The top score for the home club went to the team of Lynda Campbell, Denise Lloyd and Fran Grant with 76 points and in second place were Lesley Arnold, Trish Walker and Cheryl Powell.

In presenting the prizes the Lady captain, Barbara Beedham, paid tribute to the work done by the green staff in producing the course to such a high standard and thanked all the club staff and administrators who worked hard throughout the two very successful days.

Throughout the month of May there were very high entries in the various Men’s competitions as players looked to be the first to have their names in gold leaf on the honours boards.

First to do so was Club Champion Keith Stimpson who won the Celnik Cup on countback from Kevin Swain both doing well to score 37 points in very tough conditions.

The Coronation Cup, a rare Bogey Competition, was won by Russell Owens with +4 just beating Alan Hewett and Steve Nicholls who both recorded +3.

Nick Caulfield, the current Glamorgan Seniors Champion, posted a net 69 to win the Welsh Handicap Qualifier and moves on to challenge at the higher level.

In the Ladies Section Helen Hughes won the Tegwen Perkins Stableford with an exceptional 39 points while Candice Peterson posted the best score in the Ladies Championship Qualifier.

Perhaps performance of the month went to Club member Dan Williams who came out on top in the Whitchurch Open Men’s Singles with an impressive net 67. Considering the entry of over 150 players this was some achievement made more remarkable as it included a hole in one on the ninth hole which is a Par 4 and measures some 334 yards.
