ROMILLY Bowling Club had another good week with two wins and a loss winning their Munro Cup and S V L A games but going down to Barry Athletic in a friendly.

Romilly ‘A’ side are unbeaten in the S V L A Cup and on Saturday they travelled to play Llantwit Major, confident but expecting a hard game against a side that are always difficult to beat on their own green.

‘The Rom’ welcomed the return of Des Bannister and Tony Freeman at skip to boost the side and by the fifth end Bannister was ahead by three but Freeman was struggling at seven down. Bryn Gough’s rink was also struggling at nine behind and although Howard Jones rink was ahead albeit by one shot the overall score at this stage saw Romilly behind by 12 shots 14 – 26.

After such a poor start the game was always going to be a struggle for ‘The Rom’ to recover but by the tenth end the Romilly players were showing their battling qualities recovering to take a one shot lead. As the game progressed Romilly were beginning to take control with the rinks of Bannister, Jones and Freeman ahead by the 15th end and only

Gough’s rink behind allowing ‘The Rom’ a 19 shot advantage going into the final quarter.

Romilly maintained their form over the final six ends to run out convincing winners by 16 shots 93 – 77 remaining unbeaten taking 12 points to Llantwit’s two. Rink Scores as follows:-

The Romilly Club side had a friendly game against a strong Barry Athletic Team away at their Island green in readiness for the league season starting this Saturday away to Ferndale.

The Romilly players always look forward to playing this fixture not only to test themselves against formidable opponents but to play on a green which is always presented in pristine condition and a pleasure to play on.

On a warm sunny day the game began with the Athletic taking an early 10 shot lead by the fifth end, by the tenth end the deficit had doubled to 20 shots. Romilly were under the cosh and were finding it difficult to cut the deficit in the face of some fine bowling by Athletic skips Glyn Thomas and Martin Clarke.

At end 15 ‘The Rom’ had fallen further behind with the rinks of Fred Phillips and Brian Foscolo struggling against Thomas and Clarke’s rinks, being down 10 shots and 16 shots respectively, the other rinks skipped by Jeff Wright and Graham Cogbill were holding their own being just one behind and one ahead respectively against the rinks of Dave Wright and Rob Horgan.

Over ends 16 to 21 Romilly could not make any inroads as ‘The Athletic’ maintained their stranglehold on the game and ran out worthy winners by 31 shots 61 – 92. Rink Scores Romilly first:-

Romilly gained a 12 points to two victory over Cowbridge in their latest Munro Cup fixture and remain unbeaten.
