Cadoxton v Rhoose – Munro Cup

A bitterly cold, strong, wind welcomed Cadoxton to Rhoose for a Munro Cup Match.

It was certainly not a night to enjoy playing bowls. The difficulties of the all weather green were compounded by the gusting wind deciding where the bowl would finish. The outcome was a success on all rinks for the home side, who mastered the conditions better than the visitors.

Cadoxton v Penarth - Carruthers

The weather was much better for the trip to Penarth for a Carruthers Match but a heavy defeat by one of the Cadoxton rinks ensured a home victory.

Roy Harding gave Cadoxton a firm base for a win by leading throughout the game. On the rink skipped by Gordon Davies the score fluctuated until after 12 ends the scores were level. The score was still close but the last three ends went in favour of the home side.

Don Kuhnell found opposing skip Bob Hill in fine form, scoring two threes in the opening ends. A three and two singles reduced the deficit only for a run of six ends producing a further 11 shots against.

However at this stage a comeback produced six successful ends to reduce the difference to two. The following end three shots were held but Bob took them all out to take the shot and end a complete recovery by the visitors.

The other rink struggled from the off and trailed by 10-1 after four ends. There was no recovery and only three further ends were successful.

Cadoxton ‘A’ v Murch ‘A’

A late absentee meant that Cadoxton played a man short at home to Murch in an SVL fixture. Dai Tuck skipped the triple against Colin Garland and produced a comprehensive success, despite having to lose a quarter of the score.

Graham Garland’s rink had a good start against Bill Frampton. They won the first four ends but gradually frittered the lead away to trail 8 – 10 on the 12th end. However they soon got back into contention and finished strongly with three fives in the closing stages.

Dennis Hammond’s rink scored a single on the opening end, but did not score again until the opposition reached 13 on the tenth end. The remaining 10 ends were shared five each.

D Fanning skipped the remaining rink. The game was fairly evenly contested, except for a bad run of four ends during the middle stages when 13 shots were scored by the visitors.

Cadoxton v Murch - Carruthers

The last of the section matches was played at Cadoxton with Murch as the visitors. Neither side were in contention for qualification for the open draw stages. The outcome was two winning rinks each, with the aggregate score going to the home side.

Howard Craven’s rink held the lead until a three on the 11th end left them two shots behind, and a stronger finish left them behind by just four shots.

Roy Harding scored four threes and a four to assist in building a 19-6 lead after 12 ends. The later stages of the game saw seven of the last nine ends reduce the deficit, but a shot drawn on the final end by Kelvin Chedgzoy, decided the result.

Jim Stacey turned up late, and missed the first end, but he made up for it with some superb bowling on the rink skipped by Don Kuhnell against Ron Crouch. A strong wind interfered with direction of the bowls, but Ivor Robertson and Derek Brook overcame the problems much better than the visitors, which aided a convincing win for the rink, and ensured the overall success of the match.
