ON A bright but blustery day Barry travelled the short distance to Penarth in their latest league fixture against Old Penarthians, a side in the process of rebuilding to compete in the new league structure.

From Barry's point of view with only five games to go, two of which are against the side one place below them, a bonus point win was essential as the promotion race nears its climax.

Choosing to play against the wind in the first half the visitors opted to keep the ball in hand to nullify the conditions but were met with some good defensive play by the home side in the early stages who missed an early opportunity to take the lead from a penalty.

Launching attacks from every part of the field Barry soon took the lead following a miss pass by Perry which allowed Provis to cross in the corner with Ryan successful with the conversion from wide out.

Despite occasional sorties into Barry territory the home side were finding it difficult to cope with the extra pace of the visitors and whilst tries came at regular intervals throughout the first half the home side had been competitive during this period.

Having gained the needed bonus point during the first 40 minutes Barry rang the changes, perhaps mindful of the East District Cup Semi Final against St Peters due to be played last Tuesday.

Again in the early stages the home side competed and defended well to deny Barry but as the half wore on the superior strength and fitness began to tell and the score mounted to what must be a club record for Barry together with maybe some individual records broken too.

Andrew Jamieson as a player ended up on the wrong end of some results and found it not a happy place to be, and whilst Barry will be delighted, they should also compliment the home side for being as competitive as possible bearing in mind their selection problems on the day

This Saturday, Barry travel to Llandaff, kick off at 2.30pm. This is a side that always seem to play their best against Barry and will no doubt do so again this week.

The annual presentation awards will this year be in the form of a dinner dance to be held at the Memorial Hall on Friday, July 17.

For those wishing to attend, tables of 10 are able to be booked by contacting Andy Jamieson on Barry 411737 or by email at andyjam68@yahoo.co.uk.
