SULLY Bowls held their finals over the weekend and what a successful two days it proved to be, with both Ladies and Men jointly sharing the green to produce an incredible standard of bowling.

There were the finals of five ladies competitions to be decided and seven men’s with individuals e.g. June Best competing in five finals along with Graham Cogbill making five of the men’s.

Also, Martin Clarke and Matthew Woodcock each played in four finals and along with Best and Cogbill did extremely well to play some excellent bowls whilst obviously feeling the effects of all their games.

The Saturday morning session saw three competitions decided with the ladies selected rinks won by the four of C Bland/M Newman/C Willmot/J Best, winning 26 - 16 followed by the Junior final which went to 15-year-old Joe Cole who bowled well to beat Steve McKernan 21 – 10.

The last game of the morning was the Men’s Triples between G Cogbill/M Clarke/M Woodcock and D Parker/R Greenslade/J Greenslade with Woodcock’s Triple taking the title easily 22 – 6.

Saturday afternoon once again saw three games Ladies Triples/Men’s O’60 Pairs and The Men’s Championship. The Ladies Triples was won by Sandra Romans/Carol Willmot/June Best.

The Championship went to Martin Clarke for the second consecutive year after Jason Greenslade conceded but the game of the afternoon was the O’60 Pairs between Brian Foscolo/Graham Cogbill and Dave Curtis/Brian Griffiths.

The game played over 21 ends was neck and neck virtually all the way but by the end of the 18th end it was last year’s winners of Cogbill/Foscolo who were ahead by four shots.

The next end went to their opposition when they picked up a two, this was followed by a three to Curtis/Griffiths after Foscolo was a shade unlucky when playing a weighted shot into the head when one down.

He hit the target bowl but took his own bowls out leaving Curtis/Griffiths with a three giving them a one lead playing the last end; they managed to hold on making two shots to take the title 18 – 15.

The Sunday morning session consisted of two Four’s games, the Ladies Drawn Rinks and the Men’s Open Rinks.

The Drawn Rinks were won easily by the four of Jean Rogers/Tina Johnson/Jo Hopkins/June Best 27 – 9 and the Men’s Rinks went to the four of Graham Cogbill/Andrew Morgan/Martin Clarke/Matthew Woodcock who beat John Best/Ian Paterson/Carl Best/Brian Griffiths by 17 – 10.

Special mention must go to late substitute Andrew Morgan who being a relatively new bowler acquitted himself very well in good company.

Sunday afternoon involved three Singles Finals and the Men’s pairs the Mgt Osbourne Cup for novices was won by Sue Dance who beat Pat Cogbill 21 – 13.

The Ladies Championship was a close fought affair with the score at 12 all after 15 ends before June Best took seven shots on the next four ends to pull away before closing the game out when taking a two on the last end to win 21 – 14.

The Men’s Senior Singles went to Graham Cogbill who bowled very well in beating Fred Phillips 21 – 7, the Men’s Pairs was a one sided affair with Clarke/Woodcock beating Cogbill and Dick Cowling.

Due to Sue Britton playing in the Welsh Triples the Ladies Pairs was played a week early with Britton partnered by Lynn Bowen beating Norma Goodrich and June Best 29 – 18.

Sue Britton joined Lynda and Emma Woodcock in the Welsh Triples who bowled excellently to reach the National Final failing to win by just four shots.
