South Wales Senior League Division Two

St Josephs 1 Cadoxton Barry FC 8

Scorers: Baker, Weekley, Adams, Morgan,

Oaten, Curran, Dawson, Walsh (penalty)

AN impressive win by Cadoxton Barry was made possible by some fantastic saves throughout the game by goalkeeper, Shaun Harker.

It was the 26th minute and although they held a 2 - 0 lead, Cadoxton Barry were not looking entirely convincing.

Curran was adjudged to have nudged a player in the box to concede a penalty. The home forward stepped up confidently to take the spot kick.

Classically, he struck it firmly and low to Harker's right and it appeared to be going in just inside the post when Harker's outstretched fingertips arrived to tip the shot wide of the post in completing a fine diving save - his sixth penalty save of the season.

Had the penalty been converted it could well have been a whole different ball game, for CB had to withstand a considerable amount of pressure during the first 10 minutes.

The first goal had come against the run of play when a long Harker clearance was brought down by Thompson whose shot was cleared before coming back out to Baker whose high side on kick returned it to find the net from the right side of the penalty box boundary.

The second goal had arrived just a minute before Harker's penalty save when Walsh fed a ball along the left flank to find Morgan who, in turn, sent in a cross for Weekley to finish with another fine shot, also from the right hand edge of the box.

Then came the penalty save, which at long last spurred CB into playing like serious title contenders.

The game began to look safe when, just beyond the half hour mark, a long throw from Morgan on the right touch line reached Weekley who glanced it on with a deft header to where Adams was on hand to finish with an excellent half volley.

The opening exchanges of the second half were fairly even until, around the 15 minute mark, Weekly received the ball out to the right.

His little dink across to Morgan was just perfect for the latter to find the far left side of the net with a redirecting volley from well outside the box.

With the game now absolutely safe the substitutions started being made - the first of which saw Sam Williams replacing Luke Beattie, followed shortly after by the arrivals of Oaten and Blackmore for Weekley and Morgan.

And Blackmore's first touch saw him execute a fine pass out from midfield to find Thompson on the left.

His perfectly weighted cross to the far right post was just what was needed to allow the incoming Oaten to head back across the face of the St Joseph’s goal and into the net.

In a rare break up-field St Joseph’s saw a quality long range dipper go just over, but CB's repost was a swift counter attack that resulted in their sixth goal.

A CB free kick went off the wall for a corner; Walsh curled a metre high cross towards the middle of the box and Curran had gone forward hoping for a heading opportunity, but he quickly adapted to send it flying home from four yards off his knee.

Curran was involved again when he sent over a delicate chip towards the far post from near the left edge of the penalty box to find Dawson waiting to convert just inside the post from a tight angle.

Although that happened in the 89th minute there was still time for further goals.

The hosts attacked from the restart to catch CB defenders looking to each other to make the tackle. With Harker unsighted by the crowd in front of him it was a soft goal that dented what should have been a clean sheet.

Then straight from the restart Dawson found himself being brought down from behind as he ran into the box and Walsh wasted no time in placing and converting the spot kick with a drive high to the right side of the 'keeper to complete a thoroughly comprehensive 8 - 1 away win for Cadoxton Barry.

Cadoxton Barry must now lose at least one of their remaining three games to give any other side a chance of wresting the title away from them.

Those games are against Tongwynlais (both home and away) and St Albans at home. Those games start next Saturday at Bryn-Y-Don when the home tie against Tongwynlais takes place with a 2pm kick off.

Coles (Cadoxton Barry 2nds)

CB lost this game in the first 20 minutes, at which point they found themselves 3 - 0 down.

However, they rallied to keep the opposition from scoring further before taking control after the break.

Despite being the dominant force in the second half, the single goal that CB managed was not enough to negate the damage that had been done during the early stages of the first.

The goal, however, was top drawer. Rhydian Hopkins pumped a ball in diagonally from the left for Coles to convert with a stunning left foot volley taken from the right corner of the penalty box.

CB 'keeper Taylor had to have his wits about him as he made a couple of quality saves on the occasions that Athletic came forward on the counter.

Dockers Cup Quarter Final

Cadoxton Barry 3rds 1 Penarth Town 2nds 0

Dalton

This hard won victory sees Cadoxton Barry 3rds through to the semi-final of the divisional Docker's Cup competition.

The single goal was worthy of winning any cup tie. The ball was squared off to Dalton, situated on the edge of the box, and his first time rapier-like blast left the very good Penarth 'keeper, on this occasion, clutching at thin air.

Outstanding performances were given by 'keeper, Peacock, and defenders Read, Averies, Phillips and Charles Davies.

Well done to all the guys and good luck in the semi-final against Barry Belgrade.

Although Belgrade are unbeaten, the 3rds pushed them in a recent league match, only losing out to a late rally from the opposition after the game was tied at 2 - 2.
