South Wales Senior League Division One

Cwmbach Royal Stars 2 Sully Sports 4

SULLY Sports travelled to Cwmbach (Aberdare) for this league game. Again first team ‘keeper Kieron Sharratt was unavailable and young Sam White donned the gloves.

Sully had first advantage of the considerable slope at the Rec. Conditions were ideal but the tight pitch meant lots of wasted time retrieving the balls.

Sports had the better play as they forced many corners but were unable to capitalise on their pressure and the home teams ‘keeper was excelling with some fine saves.

Cwmbach’s first attack saw Gavin Durstin outpace the Sully markers and finish well as this excellent player scored again.

Sports again pressed and after a series of corners a defender handled on the line and Alex Long stepped up to convert for the equaliser.

Within a minute another set piece saw panic in the Stars defence and quicksilver Dan Lawlor was first to ram the ball over the goal line for a half-time lead.

Sports started the second half well up the slope and Long and Lawlor combined for Lawlor to beat the ‘keeper.

More chances followed and with Rees, Mcinery and Lewis in charge. The Sully fullbacks, Taylor Harding and Andrew Townsend, were outstanding covering many dangerous situations and still joining up well with the forwards.

A fine run from substitute Luke Hanlon saw his shot well saved by the ‘keeper but soon after Hanlon delivered a perfect cross for Dan Lawlor to score his hat-trick with a fine header.

Sports now decided to make changes as the defence was altered as Sports soaked up some home pressures.

A long ball saw a mistake in the centre of the defence and let Cwmbach in for their second.

But Sports deserved the win on a tricky pitch which has put them back at the top of the league again.

This Saturday, Sully are in Bruty Cup action at the old enemy Grange Albion, a repeat of last season’s final which saw Sully win the Cup.

Kick off at 1.30pm at Coronation Park Sloper Road.

Team: White, Townsend, Brown, Hopkins, Harding, McInery, Lewis, Rees, Hemmens, Long and Lawlor.

Subs: Hanlon, Storer and Jones.
