BARRY Ladies RFC (Bombettes) player, Lynsey Phillips, was part of the victorious England Deaf Rugby Women’s Development squad on Saturday, January 31.

Cardiff Arms Park opened its doors to two English teams when England Deaf Rugby Women’s Development squad faced Penallta in a warm up game prior to the Wales Deaf Rugby Union Men versus England Deaf Rugby Union Men.

Lynsey Phillips recently joined the side and as an example of her dedication has been travelling the 360 miles round trip to Hitchin to attend training with other squad members from around the country.

England Deaf Rugby Women’s Development squad has gathered momentum this season and now has a squad of 20 players. England set the standard by scoring the first try in the opening minutes of the game.

Originally from Bexhill-on-Sea (East Sussex), Lynsey started playing rugby at the University of Surrey. For the past four seasons Lynsey has been playing with Barry Ladies RFC (Bombettes).

Lynsey was selected to play in the team’s first game at Cardiff Arms Park playing against Welsh side Penallta.

The England team went on to win a competitive match by 22 to 12. At the moment there is currently no Welsh Deaf Rugby Union Women’s team.

It is hoped that interest will grow and give the England team an opportunity in the future to play against Welsh counterparts.
