South Wales Senior League Division Two

Cadoxton Barry FC 5 - 1 Margam YC

Weekley (two), Morgan, Gibbs

Doyle, Dawson

WITH all their major title challengers drawing on February 7, this comprehensive win puts Cadoxton Barry back in pole position in Division Two of the South Wales Senior League. However, although they boast the best goal difference in the division - six better than Whitchurch who, in beating CB 3 - 2 last week, took over temporarily at the top - other title contenders who have games in hand still might conceivably pull that back.

That is why, although they comprehensively overwhelmed Margam on the field of play, it is disappointing that the four goal winning margin was not at least doubled.

However, it has to be said that this was a quality display of controlling football from kick off to final whistle.

CB attacked down the right straight from the start to see an Oaten cross find Weekley, but the scooped shot flew over the bar. And then the same two players combined again with a Weekley header going wide on this occasion. But it was when Morgan teamed up with Oaten that CB finally took the lead.

Oaten won the ball in midfield before passing forward to Morgan who set out on a diagonal run from right to left, skipping over a number of challenges en route, before cutting a goal bound shot back into the back right of the net from the left.

And only two minutes later it was two when Oaten, making an industrious return following a two match suspension, initiated another move from the right, which ended with another diagonal ball towards the left falling perfectly into the path of Weekley to finish in similar fashion to Morgan.

With half time approaching and Margam still not having mounted a threatening attack, Oaten, once again, sent over a cross toward the far wing where a clever little flick back inside by Morgan found Weekley on hand to finish from close in.

With the points looking comfortably in the bag CB started the second half playing some delightful exhibition football, though they weren't as incisive as they had been earlier. Indeed it took a Margam own goal to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Yet again an Oaten run down the right ended with a cross toward goal, but this time there appeared to be no threat as it came down close to a 'keeper who was being closely shadowed by defender, Doyle. But a misunderstanding between the two ended with Doyle glancing an intended clearing header into his own net.

Margam then engineered their first half chance of the game, but the alert Harker anticipated the cross and was forward to cut it out before any damage was done.

But within the minute it was the visiting ‘keeper who was in action when he pounced on a stinging blast from Steel, just before he made way for Thompson.

Immediately Margam won a free kick towards the right of midfield. The cross came in and, for the only time in the game, CB defenders looked each other to make a move.

But none did, allowing the forward to weave around a couple of obstacles before rolling the ball home with ease from close in.

And that was the end of Margam's brief offensive. Virtually the whole of the remaining 15 minutes was played out in the visitors' half. Yet CB continued to succumb to the temptation to showboat a little too much, declining to take shooting opportunities in favour of that clever extra trick.

And the outcome was that the game was well into added time before the Margam net was breached for the final time.

Before that, however, and with Blackmore now on the field for the two goal Weekley, Baker was upended in the box. But Oaten made his only error of the game when he stepped up to see his spot kick graze the wrong side of the post.

But, with time running out and Margam finding it difficult to get out of their own half for any lengthy period, Oaten was able to make amends for his penalty miss when another of his right-sided crosses set up a bit of pinball in front of goal.

Various players having seen close in shots blocked, it was finally Dawson, on his second attempt, who found the net.

There was barely time for the restart before the final whistle blew on a game that was almost totally dominated by the home side. But credit must go to the visiting defence who made sure the score remained respectable when they might so easily have imploded.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry make the short trip to Llanrumney for a 2pm kick off
