AT A recent Maltese Open, a wrestler from Rhoose enjoyed success with his team.

Iwan Baker from Rhoose was part of the team which consisted of nine wrestlers and two officials led by head coach Alan Jones.

The team took part in this important annual international event alongside the hosts and teams from Northern Ireland, Switzerland and Italy.

This event was the last in a busy calendar year dominated by the Commonwealth Games, in which the wrestling team took home a bronze.

Each team member performed excellently with many terrific, hard fought bouts especially from the Cadets (16-17 years) who competed in a combined category with the older juniors (18-20 years).

This made things harder for Team Wales but despite this disadvantage Iwan Baker and Reece Price, both earning their first caps, produced great results, with their team mate Bobby Signh winning the gold.

Further medals for the team went to Tom Nelson with a bronze in his first senior International in the 65kg division, Kane Charig got a silver in the same category losing by just one point and Tommy Hawthorn won a gold in the senior 74kg.

Wales’s only competing female wrestler, Molly McCann, took gold in her category and Salman Myalslav took the fourth gold for the team in 84kg senior and sealed the overall team trophy for the group.
