SOUTH Wales Senior League Division One

Sully Sports 2 - Brecon 2

Sully, having gone to the top of the South Wales Senior League last weekend, knew this game was going to be tough and so it proved. The conditions were excellent with no wind and a soft well grassed pitch at Swanbridge. Sports started well with Lawlor and Rees up front with Conner Mcinery back after injury but without Alex Long still not fully fit.

The Brecon keeper made a fine save to deny Lawlor but on 20 minutes, and it was Lawlor who received a pass on the edge of the box, beat two defenders only to be brought down by the keeper. A red card and a penalty but the substitute keeper made a fine save and cleared.

Brecon were defending very well and putting their bodies on the line with Sports getting frustrated as the visitors got back in the game when they were rewarded from a free kick which was deflected just inside of the post to give Brecon a 30th minute lead.

All the possession Sports were getting was wasted with some poor passing and errors, and it was a very unhappy manager who laid into the team at the break.

Sully tried to break down the resilient Brecon defence but were unable to convert their chances as the minutes ticked away. Sully had a stroke of luck when a good ball into the box was headed past his own keeper by a defender for the equaliser.

Townsend blasted a shot against a defender on the line and Harding shot narrowly over the bar but Brecon were riding the storm. Some good free kicks into the box from Brecon saw Sharratt at full stretch but in general the ball was in the Brecon half.

Alex Long came on to add to the attacking force but as the full time whistle neared a Brecon defender suffered a knee injury and a 10 minute break in play was restarted after the player was able to leave the field after being attended to by Sully physio Sian Lee.

A corner for sports in injury time saw a scramble and Chris Rees poked the ball into the net for what everyone thought was the winner but immediately a free kick from the half way line was pumped into the Sully penalty area and was well cleared away. But to Sully’s horror the referee decided the follow through had fouled a Brecon player and Brecon equalised from the spot to gain a share of the points which were well deserved for their brave defending but a big disappointment for a subdued Sully team.

Sports face another big game next Saturday as they travel to Cornelly a difficult game against a good side.

Sully Youth 3 v 1 Cogan

In the South Wales Youth League, Sully finished their final fixture of 2014 with three goals from Kieran Allen, Rhys Knight and Josh Lewis. Sully sit top of the Youth League and will aim to push on in 2015 looking to improve on their performances.

Sully Ladies were short on numbers due to several work commitments and illness and injury fielding nine players in the group stages of the Cup, which they were already out of. In the second half captain/keeper Abi White was injured which left them with eight players one of which was an outfield player in goals.

The Ladies gave a spirited effort but couldn't be expected to win a game under such circumstances and the result was irrelevant. The Ladies look forward to getting back to league action and full strength in 2015.
