Brecon Corries 6 - 4 Cadoxton Barry FC after extra time

Score at full time 4 - 4

The score was 5 - 4 late in the second half of extra time, with all CB players appearing to be suffering from exhaustion and one playing on with an injury, when a Corries corner set up a bit of a goalmouth scramble in the centre of the Cadoxton Barry penalty area. In the scramble a home player went to ground.

A jittery CB start saw BC going close on several occasions before a cross from the left side of the box was fired home from the edge of the six yard box.

And that was the cue for CB to start playing for within a minute they were back on level terms as Morgan found Baker to equalise with a low drive from 12 yards. And then Morgan and Thompson combined, but this time the keeper got well behind Thompson's shot. CB were now having a bigger say in matters as good work by Adams set Weekley up, but he fired of the keeper's left hand upright.

From the half hour mark, however, Brecon began to reassert themselves, winning a series of corners in the process. But CB weathered the storm and started one of their own when, a minute before half time, a flick on from Oaten found Thompson close in at the far left post. And he belted it into the roof of the net from three yards out.

Early in the second half a good interchange of passes involving Adams and Thompson saw the latter fire only inches over the bar. The second half was now an evenly balanced end to end affair, but BC did manage to get back on level terms when a well taken corner was toe poked home at the far post.

A Baker throw in found Weekley to shoot from distance - the keeper making an excellent save. And Baker was again at the centre of things as CB took the lead for the second time. After bulldozing his way past a couple of challenges, be got the ball through to Weekley who, in turn, flicked it on to Thompson to execute an excellent finish from a yard inside the box.

Brecon were now clearly fazed by the fact that things were not going as they had expected against a lower tier side and started to show the more physical side of their game. But following a bit of the proverbial handbags a Beaty cross just failed to connect with Oaten's head for what would have been a certain goal. But shortly after Oaten took a knock that ensured that that was the last of the action that he would see.

Sam Williams had been warming up with a view to replacing another player, but Oaten's plight meant that all plans were scuppered as Williams came on for him. There were now no subs available for later tactical use - the manager and chairman being named to fill the bench. And much needed they would have been.

A BC corner set up a bit of pinball before a final stab saw the ball in the CB net. Beatty then took a knock which might normally have warranted a substitution. But with none available a positional change saw him move forward with another player sitting in his right sided defensive slot.

Two late substitutions had now seen Brecon playing with renewed freshness while CB struggled with 10 men and an injured player who couldn't leave the field. And two minutes later, it looked all over as Corries scored with a fine header from a well taken corner.

But, with time running out CB dug in to see Weekley battling through to set Morgan up, but he fired over. That, one would have thought, would have been CB's last chance and when a good penalty shout was denied when Adams appeared to have been brought down in the box, it did seem all over.

Veteran assistant manager Barnet had other ideas when, with just seconds of added time remaining, he took a dip from close to the edge of the box. And it came down beautifully beyond the outstretched keeper to earn CB a well deserved pot at going through in extra time.

The lights were turned on to illuminate the growing gloom as 10 fit men and an injured player faced up to battle further with 11 fit players which included three fresh sets of legs.

It was going to need a miracle for CB to win through now. And it simply wasn't to be as the right back broke down the right to cleverly disguise his intended shot as a cross to deceive CB defenders and goalkeeper alike.

At 5 - 4 CB still kept plugging away, Morgan finding Thompson to send over a cross that Baker only just failed to connect with. But when that unique double handed presentation of the ball to the scorer arrived, there was going to be no way back.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry returns to league duty when they visit Penrhiwceiber Cons.
