BARRY Saints were triumphant in a difficult away fixture in the Lazarou Challenge Cup.

Both teams had a 100 per cent record going into the feisty encounter but the Saints showed their class with a 6-4 victory.

Saints started at a fast pace and with this took the lead with Nathan Williams feeding Darren Townsend who hit a powerful half volley from outside the box with the keeper unable to keep it out.

Saints doubled their league after some great play from David A Evans who found Darren Townsend out wide on the right. Townsend burnt his marker for pace only to be brought down in the box. Up stepped David Evans to convert with the keeper guessing right but the shot too accurate and just out of reach.

Space Jam pulled one back after the Saints failed to clear their lines after a corner. The two goal advantage was extended when Townsend turned provider for Williams playing a low pass across the 6 yard box, Williams sliding in to get a boot on the ball whilst stretching, the ball then struck the bar before crossing the line.

Space Jam wouldn't roll over and scored another goal just before half time. The pacey front man latching on to a long ball, rounding the Saints keeper before passing the ball into the empty net. 3-2 at half time and Saints knew they were in for an intense battle. Space Jam came out flying second half and pressed Saints into their own half but as usual, when the Saints back is against the wall they are at their most dangerous.

An impressive counter attack found Darren Townsend 1 on 1 and precisely sliding his effort under the keeper to extend their lead.

Yet again the Saints conceded moments later after being unable to stop the Space Jam danger man, who burst down the channel to lay up a teammate for a simple finish.

Saints began to dictate the game again and numerous chances fell to them.

They were rewarded when substitute Ashley Ashill cut in from the left wing and hit an ambitious effort that squirmed through the keeper to restore the two goal advantage.

This time the Saints pressed on and found themselves on the scoresheet again. Nathan Williams picked out in the box, his first effort cleared off the line by a defender but the ball fell back to him to smash the ball home.

A rare passing error at the back handed Space Jam another goal in the last minute to make the score 6-4 but Saints are the team who's name goes in the hat for the next round. Next up Saints are at Wenvoe in a top of the table clash with Canton Cross Vaults
