PUPILS across the Vale of Glamorgan have been selected to take part in the council’s Coaches of the Future scheme.

The initiative was launched at the Civic Offices in Barry where 15 sixth form pupils attended.

At the special reception the group were able to listen to two British swimmers, Ieuan Lloyd and Tom Haffield, as they discussed the positive impact that their swimming coaches have made so far in their careers.

Ieuan and Tom were joined at the launch by Liam Tanner, a sixth form pupil from Barry Comprehensive School who is one of the Vale of Glamorgan’s four Gold Sports Ambassadors.

The council’s cabinet member for leisure councillor Gwyn John, said: “This is an extremely exciting initiative which will provide an invaluable insight into sports coaching. Ieuan, Tom and Liam are three excellent examples of young people who inspire people through sport and it was fascinating to hear from Ieuan and Tom about how various coaches have helped them in different ways due to their differing styles and attributes.”

“The impact that a coach can have on a young person is huge, helping to shape them not only as sportsmen and women, but as people too. Everyone remembers a good sports coach and I am delighted that this programme will help to nurture the skills of the county’s next generation of sports coaches.”

The scheme is designed to Young People the opportunity to get involved in sports leadership and coaching. Those involved will be given a structured and meaningful introduction to coaching and volunteering in all physical activities by providing training and hands on experience.

The programme is part of the council’s Sports and Development Team’s commitment to growing a skilled and passionate workforce.
