SOUTH Wales Senior League Division Two

Cadoxton Barry 4 - 1 Llanrumney Utd

Oaten, Dawson, Matthews OG

Thompson, Weekley

Whilst this was a well deserved win for Cadoxton Barry, it took a pair of super subs to make sure of the outcome. Around the 80 minute mark with the score at 2 - 1 and the single goal lead not looking entirely safe, Oaten and Steel, two players who had put in excellent shifts, were replaced by Weekley and Thompson. And neither of them had been on the pitch for more than a few minutes before, between them, they had doubled the Cadoxton Barry tally.

A clever passing move involving Weekley and Morgan saw the latter send in a low and accurate cross that Thompson angled home into the bottom right of the visitors' net. And then, as the match moved towards added time, Morgan again latched on to a through ball to send over another excellent cross, this time to see Weekley finishing from the left side of the box into the far right of the net.

Whilst the game had looked safe following the Thompson goal, the outcome had been in considerable doubt until manager Adam Harvey's inspired changes. Indeed Llanrumney had the better of the opening exchanges as they used the wind that was at their backs to fire on sight, a couple of efforts going only just over the bar.

Indeed, the game was seven minutes old before CB had their first serious attack, an attack that was to give them the lead. It was a long Curran ball towards the left flank that saw a visiting defender and Oaten chasing down. The defender looked favourite but slipped as he checked, leaving Oaten the opportunity to run in from a narrow angle. His shot towards the near post surprised the keeper who was probably expecting a cross. And he was unable to readjust in time to prevent the shot from squeezing in between his outstretched fingertips and the near post.

Determined battling in midfield then saw the ball come out to Steel whose cross was met by Oaten, but his header went just wide of the far post. But it was Oaten who was involved in the build up to CB's second goal. He did well to keep a high ball down the line in play before crossing to Dawson who, on the first bounce, netted with a quality drive from the edge of the box.

But the game continued to be end to end with the visitors enjoying brief periods of pressure and in the 35th minute a fierce drive from a narrow angle on the left gave Matthews no chance of getting out of the way as it flew in off his body. The outcome hung in the balance once more. And, in a nail biting moment, another 40 yard dip at goal saw Harker just managing to finger tip the shot over the bar.

Oaten then had a golden opportunity as he ran on to a loose ball with only the advancing keeper to beat. But the scooped effort went straight towards the keeper who was able to gather comfortably.

The game continued in similar vein as half time approached, CB playing through the park and Llanrumney shooting on sight from distance, Harker tipping another 25 yard effort over his bar.

Early in the second half a rising free kick from Llanrumney went narrowly wide of the near post. And although CB began to look more confident, with the exception of a corner which saw a Curran header cleared off the line, hints that CB might add to their tally were sparse, until those late substitutions however.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry travel west along the M4 to Port Talbot where they meet up with Margam Youth Club, though all their players would look very out of place age-wise if they attended one.

In Division One of the Vale of Glamorgan League Cadoxton Barry 2nds lost out 2 – 0 at home to Dinas Powys Athletic while the 3rds, playing in Division Two, went down away from home 3 – 2 to FC Pumas 2nds. Smart and Reilly scored the Cadoxton Barry goals.
