A MINUTE'S silence was observed at Jenner Park last weekend, as the footballers of Barry Town and Chepstow paid their respects to the casualties of the Great War.

Joined by representatives of the Royal British Legion, Barry captain James Saddler and secretary David Cole laid a wreath at the centre circle ahead of kick-off, on what was the club's second annual Armistice Memorial Day.

With 2014 marking a century since the start of the conflict, the Town also honoured one of its own, with the induction of former player Major James Wightman into its Hall of Fame.

Wightman, the team's original captain, was a mere 25 years old when he was shot by a German sniper at the Somme, passing away several days later.

The match itself was a highly-entertaining affair, with the visitors twice taking a first-half lead, only to be pegged back by goals from Barry's TJ Nagi and Dale Howarth.

Howarth, the club's player of the month for October, then doubled his tally before the interval, putting Gavin Chesterfield's side 3-2 ahead and into the driver's seat.

The second period saw Chesterfield introduce midfielder Rob Blatchford, a signing from Aberdare earlier in the week.

Blatchford, who scored twice against the Town in October's Welsh Cup tie, has already made more than 100 appearances in Barry colours in previous spells, and looks to be a choice addition to this season's promotion-chasing squad.

Ultimately though, the last word would go to winger Howarth, who completed his first hat-trick for the club to seal all three points.

Unbeaten Barry now sit on top of Welsh League Division Two, with 25 points from nine games, ahead of Saturday's trip to Croesyceiliog (2pm kick-off).

The next visitors to Jenner Park will be Ely Rangers, in a rearranged fixture on Saturday, November 15 (2pm).
