JUST how do you manage to grab almost 60 per cent of the possession in a football match and still end up on the wrong end of an 8 - 1 scoreline? Well if you shoot when you should pass and pass when you should shoot and add to that the fact that you are up against a no-quarter-given defence that might help. Then you find yourselves missing a key defender in the shape of Luke Walsh coupled with an apparent lack of communication in the re-arranged rear guard, that might help too.

Quality early goals from Parry and Hughes set the home side on their way, though, with the amount of ball they were seeing, the situation didn't look beyond redemption for CB. That was until, in the 35th minute, a long Garw clearance down the right drew keeper Harker out in that direction. However, the ball was comfortably controlled by a CB defender, but, with no present danger, the pass across the back failed to find its intended, leaving an unguarded goal for the oncoming Blanch to accurately fire the loose ball home from distance.

Almost immediately a long ball from the CB defence was cleverly chested down by Dawson with home supporters crying out for off side. But the referee didn't see things that way and one step and one bounce later a Dawson 20 yard volley was in the back of the home net. For a while longer CB still looked well capable of pulling the match out of the fire.

But just before half time Garw won a free kick some 20 yards out on the left with Chris Baker stepping up to fire in a shot that completely deceived Harker in the CB goal. So by the time that the half time whistle blew it was beginning to look like it was game over.

And an early second half own goal made sure that it was, when all Newlands could do in trying to intercept a shot was deflect it into his own goal. Then, only 10 minutes later, following a number a CB attacks that eventually petered out, Lewis got Garw's sixth after a sluggish CB defence stood back waiting for others to make the move. Eventually, it was Garw's Lewis who moved the ball into the net.

Again CB pressed with an Oaten free kick going only just the wrong side of the upright and a move from Baker to Weekley saw the latter hit the post with the keeper pulling off a great save as the loose ball was driven back at him.

Then CB forced four consecutive corners which came to nothing before the home side cleared their lines. But the lofted ball spelled no danger until the scuffed clearance fell to Parry out to the far left. Harker came forward, but Parry got past him to find that he had the narrowest of angles from which to aim at an unattended net. He did and the line of trajectory was spot on as the ball rolled home off the far post.

Although it was now game, set and match, CB continued to go forward to, yet again, concede to a soft counter punch. Again the forward ball fell into, what should have been the protective custody of the CB defence. But they decided to pass it around at the back and eventually Newlands was dispossessed with the resultant cross being spectacularly converted by way of a fearsome header from Parry.

And that is how to lose a match heavily when you have the greater share of possession. Even a home official said that CB was the most attack minded side that had visited Blandy Park this season.

Next Saturday Cadoxton Barry face Whitchurch at Bryn-Y-Don in a 2pm kick off when they will have to be far more innovative in front of goal and much more solid at the back.

Meanwhile, in Division One of the Vale of Glamorgan League, Cadoxton Barry 2nds ran riot at Rhoose Athletic 2nds where goals from Rhys Hopkins (2), Rhydian Hopkins, Wells, Coles, Gareth Fiddler and Shepherd tallied up to give them a 7 – 1 away victory. And in Division Two Cadoxton Barry 3rds fought out a 3 – 3 home draw with Masons Moving Group. Smart, Geary and Read were on the mark for CB.
