A BARRY tennis club has crowned one of its busiest ever seasons with the bestowing of honours on its hardworking junior members.

Barry Tennis Club hosted a junior presentation evening in which it also saw more than 75 club members and friends enjoy off-court activities, buffet and refreshments in the clubhouse together with a well-supported raffle with contributions from a number of local businesses.

Event sponsors FitM8 presented annual shields to the winners - 8&u Danny Mickelsen, 9&u Danny Mickelsen, 12&u Olivia Barnett and 16&u Tom Butler-Sainsbury.

Several individual awards were presented on the night for Most Improved Player Lily-Mae Figgins, Players' Player Emily Davies, Most Promising Mini Player Thomas Zeraschi, Most Promising Junior Player Tom Butler-Sainsbury, and Coach's Inspiration Camille Loughman.

Tennis coach and mum-of-three Penny Mickelsen said: “With membership numbers almost trebling over the last 6 months, the club really has much to celebrate, and this event was the first of a busy social calendar that will continue throughout the autumn/winter season, in addition to introducing a number of new on-court activities including ladies coaching, junior development squads, CardioTennis, TennisXpress, and Mums&Tots Tennis.

“The presentation evening was an opportunity to celebrate achievements and look forward to building on the solid foundations laid during the 2014 summer season. With a strong ethos of community engagement, the club is keen to meet the needs of the people of Barry through a diversity of both sport and social activities, and is delighted by the support already shown by local businesses towards achieving that goal. Special thanks must go to event sponsors and main raffle prize donors, Park Crescent-based business FitM8 who are working with the club to offer fitness and nutritional advice and support to families as well as facilitating the installation of floodlights to allow year-round court usage. The club would also like to thank the other prize donors Vic Hopkins Butchers, Vale Cake Boutique, Fun Harbour, Pampered Chef, and Motorpoint Arena.

“These are exciting times for the tennis club. Whatever your standard, age or ability, the club can cater for you, and the main emphasis is on having fun – come and join us.”
