BARRY Town qualified for the Welsh Cup on Saturday afternoon, with a 5-2 win over a hard-working and organised Ystradgynlais.

Having scored 19 without reply in their previous three qualifiers, the visitors must have feared the worst when Barry raced into a 2-0 lead by the 20-minute mark.

Making his first start of the month, James Dixon opened proceedings in the 11th minute, before swiftly doubling the Town's advantage with his and Barry's second.

Nevertheless, the visiting fifth tier champions kept their heads and did enough to stop the rot, creating some fine chances of their own as the game progressed.

After Barry's Lee Baldock, playing in an advanced midfield role, had struck a post, Lewis Cosslett's effort appeared to put the tie beyond the reach of Ystradgynlais.

However, the visitors impressed the home crowd and would soon snatch one back; ending Dan Bradley's run of qualifying round clean sheets in the process.

For the second consecutive outing, Town winger Dale Howarth entered a man of the match performance, and the wide man added his name to the scoresheet to restore Barry's three-goal cushion.

Ystradgynlais though were far from finished; and after trimming the gap to two once more, the blues came a goalpost away from making it 4-3 and setting up a tense finale.

As it was, Barry did more than enough to advance; with lively substitute Paul Morgan pressing forward to net the Town's fifth and final goal.

A somewhat subdued affair, Gavin Chesterfield's side have entered far stronger performances, but will be nonetheless pleased to secure their place in the famous old competition.

Ystradgynlais meanwhile will have much to look back on with pride, as they now attempt to win a fourth successive league title.

The draw for the First Round proper of the competition was made on Monday morning, with Barry handed an away trip to Aberdare Town of Welsh League Division One on Saturday, October 4.
