AT Romilly Park on Saturday, August 30 Barry Romilly Ladies were involved in Five Finals with the pick of the games being the Handicap Final between Norma Goodrich and Beryl Holmes. There was no advantage to either player as they both started on scratch but it was Goodrich who took the lead early on and after ten ends held a four shot lead 8 – 4. Goodrich’s advantage increased to seven shots by the fifteenth end leading 13 – 6 but on end sixteen Holmes played a good drawing bowl to take a single.

This appeared to lift Holmes confidence and over the next six ends scores of 3, 1, 1, 3, 1, 1 were registered with some fine bowling and Holmes suddenly found herself in front 17 – 13 on the 22nd end. Goodrich reversed the trend over the next three ends scoring five shots without reply to go back into the lead 18 – 17 but Holmes hit back immediately to level at 18 – 18. On the 28th end the score remained tied at 19 all but it was Goodrich who held her nerve to secure the two shots required to win 21 – 19 in an excellent game.

The Championship was played between Myra Newman and Marilyn Werner and it was Newman who went ahead and by the tenth end the advantage was 14 – 0. Werner then scored a two and a single to get on the scoreboard but Newman hit back immediately taking a three on the 13th end to lead 17 – 3. Newman was bowling well and remained in control finally scoring a single on the 20th end to win comfortably 21 – 10.

Although Newman had won the Championship she met an inform Kathy Bryan in the two wood singles and lost 16 – 11.

The four wood pairs between Lynne Lafford and Joan Walden against Jackie McPherson and Marilyn Werner was a one sided affair with the score in favour of McPherson and

Werner 29 – 5, although well beaten, both losing finalists remained in good spirit and showing a good attitude claiming that they would both learn from this game.
