ROMILLY Bowls Club first aim this season was too retain their place in the CML Division One for next season when the league reduces from twelve teams to only eight; this has been achieved finishing a respectable fifth.

With the outdoor C M L season already at an end Romilly were hoping to have at least one trophy in their cabinet and Gwyn Rees’s midweek Munro Cup Side managed this with a victory last Wednesday.

Having lost their opening game against Llantwit Major it looked like an uphill task but with commitment from members the selected teams bowled well to get to a position where there were possibilities of lifting the title. With four games to go Romilly needed to win all their games and two of these were away against Dinas Powys and Penarth Windsor who were above them in the table. Having beaten Millwood there was a visit to Dinas Powys who fielded a very strong side and the ‘Rom’ were up against it from end one. By the final end Dinas were holding a two shot lead having won on three of their rinks and it was left to the Romilly rink of Colin Davies, Tony Freeman, Rhodri Phillips and skip Fred Phillips who had been playing well all evening to rescue the situation and secure the points which they did taking three shots on last end for a Romilly victory by only one shot but enough for an eight points to six win. Cadoxton were the next victims as the ‘Rom’ won by a comfortable forty shots taking the full fourteen points. The next game was against Penarth Windsor who were the current league leaders therefore a win was imperative to maintain any chance of challenging for the title. The game was played at Penarth Windsor who also had a very strong side out but Romilly rose to the occasion winning on two rinks and drawing on another for an excellent 11 points to 3 victory. With one game to go Romilly still needed to win by a minimum of eleven points to take the title, this was achieved with a convincing win over Belle Vue of Penarth, taking the full 14 points, assuring the ‘Rom’ of a successful Munro Cup campaign.

Although the leagues are over Romilly players still have important games to play with Rink of Alan Bryan, Mel Newman, George Trepleton and Graham Cogbill playing in the final of the County

Senior Fours and Graham Cogbill are joined by Ray Hewitson for the Senior Pairs Final also Romilly are in the finals of the Hugh Meddins Trophy.
